Moving to DR....Can I do it?

I need help from someone who has lived in the DR or lives there. In 2010 when I break out of my military contract, I was planning on moving to DR and I wanted to know how much money would I need to start a new life in the country. My spanish is intermediate and hopefully by 2010 I will be fluent(I have friends). If anyone can let me know how or if there is an easy way to go about doing it, tell me please. It has been a lifelong dream to live in a spanish speaking country, and I choose this one :)

I also am planning to take a 2week or so vacation there later this year.

I’ll try to answer your questions the best way I can; when moving you need to consider all your expenses so here: (keep in mind the currency is 33 pesos to 1 dollar)
House/Apartments – these go from $12,000-$20,000 Pesos for rent per a 2 bedroom, living room, kitchen and service area
Food – cost of food is not that bad, roughly for one person you can get a nice list for about $3,000 this will last you 2 weeks or about.
Transportation- DR has public transportation, last time I was there was like $5 pesos per route but if you decide you want to buy your own car well prices are about $5,000 dollars more than what you will pay in the US

All this varies between cities in the Dominican Republic, what I gave you reflects somewhat the capital prices (Santo Domingo). There are other cities like La Vega, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Santiago and other where the cost of living will be much less. For example an apartment with the same description as above will be from $5,000 to $10,000.

If you know how to manage your money and not waist on any little thing you see you would do just fine. Like every third world country you will it’s not that great organize but first follow your instinct and don’t trust anyone you don’t know…I guess this a general rule when you visit a place you don’t know really well.

Hi Marcus,
Yes, I did the same about 14 years ago. I'm a European and had a relatively nice life but I was missing something,
so decided to come to live in the Dominican Republic.
And I'm not regretting this decision. But there is a but!
First you must learn the country and the people before taking
the final step!! So, like you want to do come first a few times and discover as much as possible!. I'm living at the north coast and if you wanna some help or advise just ask me by
e-mail.
Good luck!

I understand the DR is following in the footsteps of of many of the central american countries when it comes developing enough of an infrastrucutre to attaract foreigners.

The following website has many excellent articles about the pros, cons and costs and regulations of moving there, but you will have to spend some time digging around. They have a ton of articles but they are not the best organized.

sure, that will be the best place to go if you wanna run away from something,The Dominican Republic is a country that is not well organized,if you go to spain they might get you in an instant, and spaniars are not that social with others, dominicans are very nice plus you will have a lot of fun drinkin brugal and visiting all those beautiful places like rivers, beaches and traditional places=night club,-How much money would you need to start a new life in that country? well that depends..house?,alone?,job?etc

Why choose such a poor and crime infested country where the spanish is the worst spoken in all of spanish-speaking countries? If you like dreams, move to Spain where the real Spanish culture is at.
