You should spend at least 3 months in Jamaica before you make any decision. Going to Jamaica as a tourist is wonderful, sometimes you feel like you are rich, but if you live down there its a different story. It could be quite rough, things are expensive and crime is also a factor.
I am not detouring you from your plans but think about it.
Do you have an education?
What type of job do you plan to have?
Where in Jamaica do you plan to live?
Do you plan to assimilate with the Jamaican people?
There are some really nice places in Jamaica to live but it cost money. Other places you would not want to be left alone at night. |

Depends on what your expecting??
If you thinking paradise on the beach.. then think again.
If you are thinking - getting a job, paying rent, finding a car, paying high prices for petrol and food costs, paying bills, dealing with day to day grind.. then sure. go for it.
I moved to the bahamas 11 years ago to be with my boyfriend. I'm bored to death with it. Travel home (and elsewhere) every chance I get.
I have the same life.. but now it's hot all the time and I have a tan. Still have to live the day to day life.. It's not all pina colada's on the beach.. or smoking ganga til you pass out..
Oh.. by the way.., there are immigration laws that you'll have to deal with as well... I'm sure they will change some in the next 6 years.
Good Luck. |

You should specify the part of Jamaica. If you are moving to someplace touristy like Ocho Rios, that should be ok. The countryside is also relaxed and soooo beautiful but it is difficult to get around. If you are moving to someplace like Kingston, you need to know what parts are ok to go to. Parts of Kingston are not even safe for Jamaicans. (My boyfriend is born and raised in Jamaica and still knows there are areas that he can't go into without someone who is accepted in those parts.)
I agree with the previous poster, you need to figure out how you are going to make a living. It may be beautiful, but it is still a third world country. |

So what are you expecting? You need to first answer this question and then do your research by talking to people and getting the facts... Do you have family in Ja? |

If you are expecting to move to a poor country with half built houses and little shanties everywhere then sure. There aren't a lot of jobs in Jamaica unless you are a doctor or dentist, things like that. The small amount of jobs that are there are usually in resorts and they only get paid like $5 a day. Your plan is probably not as well thought out as it should be. If you and your friend are wealthy and set for life have fun in Jamaica, if not you need to do some more research. |

Well of corse like any place it depends on what kind of community you move into. Jamica is often sterotyped into all rastafariens, weed, crazy black people.... I would advice you to take a 2-3 months holiday there first before you make any decisions!! Thats the best way to go around it!! Also dont just stay in a hotel.... or stay in a hotel/apartment close to the locals :D
Good luck xx :D |

since you werent born there i say go to a good tourist area and you just cant go walking around or driving around you have to know where your going cause they will kill you to rob you now is a bad time to move to jamaica its even bad for the people born and raised there people are getting crazier and crazier and if you do move their make sure your careful and do not and i repeat do not stop at a stoplight if you are by yourself |
