The largest of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix’s style is often described as having a combination of St. John’s laid back atmosphere and St. Thomas' faster pace. Tourism, agriculture and oil refining are the island’s main industries. St. Croix is home to the Hess Oil Refinery. Historical sugar mills are strewn across St. Croix’s beautiful landscape. St. Croix has two main towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted. Between the islands developed areas are ‘rain forest’, grassy cattle fields, historical buildings and golf courses. St. Croix has a town and country feel, more so than any of the other Virgin Islands. Although St. Croix is a quiet island, it does have its fair share of entertainment in the form of music festivals, Carnival, crab races, dining and theatre productions. Fishing, scuba diving, sailing, boating and outdoor water and land sports in general are popular activities. The only casino in the Virgin Islands is on St. Croix. St. Croix has many of the same associations as St. Thomas; Rotary clubs, Chamber of Commerce, historical conservation groups among others. Educational facilities range from elementary level to university. St. Croix is set apart from the other islands because of a larger physical distance; it is some 40 miles away from St. Thomas. Traveling between St. Croix and St. Thomas is facilitated by ferry service and small commuter airlines. St. Croix has it’s own airport for commuting to the mainland. The Juan Luis Hospital is available for medical needs.

Here is a link to alot of information about St Croix and all of the USVI. It also has a message board, as you get closer to your move date, you will have many questions. Bookmark this site. It has info on shipping, jobs, schools, cost of living, what to expect living in the islands, culture, stories about people moving to the USVI etc.

You are being given a great opportunity to see where your roots began. Good for you. Good Luck and enjoy it all)

Most of the crime is among locals and West Indians....not alot of the violent crime is tourist or mainland transplant related. If you are smart enough to stay out of the "bad" areas then you are more likely to be fine. I've vacationed on the island for years as a single woman and never had any problems, other than my ipod getting stolen out of my car - but I left it unlocked so I can take some of the blame for that one. I've never felt threatened but I don't walk around the projects late at night either.

Well St.Croix is a great place for living compared to St.Thomas (tourist trap) and St.John (millionare cove). But the economy for St.Croix is growing. In St.Croix you get cheaper gas. You can find good paying jobs, the cheapest condos/ apartments in the territory. The cheapest area to buy land to build a house. Good shopping areas (Sunny Isles, Christiansted town, etc... Here in the VI life is very simple. If you come from the states and you're moving here you'll think it's easier except the high food prices. But you get to live more, have fewer bills. enjoy many priveliges the mainland can't offer. You find more time on your hand. You'll enjoy the Cruzan foods. You'll enjoy the culture. Especially during Christmas time. for more info on the island of St.Croix email me. One thing bout St.Croix most of the crimes: killing, Homicide, missings, etc.. are drug related so once u ain't in da mess u safe.

Beautiful place to be . Jobs are a little scarce there, but as for crime it can be the same as the mainland, its just seems more concentrated because the VI is small. St. Croix is beautiful layed back, no rush, if you are this type then STX is great for you.

If you like a high crime, no justice lifestyle then the USVI is for you. Read this excerpt from the local paper. 2008 will surpass 2007 murder rates at the current pace.

The Virgin Islands Daily News - A Pulitzer Prize Winning Newspaper

January 16th, 2008

SPECIAL REPORT: Crime in Paradise
Gun crimes, homicides put V.I. among most violent places to live in U.S.
By JOSEPH TSIDULKO
ANALYSIS

Homicides in the Virgin Islands reached a record level in 2007, and gun
crimes surged, despite a highly touted law enforcement initiative to take
illegal firearms off the street.

The territory's homicides rose above the record set just one year earlier,
armed robberies spiked and shootings skyrocketed, according to statistics
compiled by The Daily News. The original source for many of those reports
was the Police Department's blotter, which is the department's unofficial
record of all crimes reported to police.

The violence particularly increased in St. Thomas, which surpassed St.
Croix in most crime statistics for the first time in recent years. Before
2007, the two islands had roughly the same number of homicides, armed
robberies and shootings.

There were indications near the close of 2007, however, that changes in
police tactics and new task-force operations targeting high crime areas
were proving successful.

Those operations, which led to several arrests and the seizure of many
illegal guns, were spurred by an initiative Gov. John deJongh Jr.
announced in October to combat gun crime. The initiative focused on
increasing cooperation between local and federal law enforcement agencies
and was formalized in a memorandum of understanding between local and
federal prosecutors.

In compiling its statistics, The Daily News tallied every published report
of homicides, armed robberies and serious shootings.

Homicides and shootings

Last year, of the 46 homicides in the Virgin Islands, 27 were on St.
Thomas, 16 were on St. Croix and three were on St. John. One of those
homicides was the result of a police shooting on St. John that was ruled
justifiable.

In 2006, there were 44 total homicides - 23 on St. Thomas and 21 on St.
Croix - of which four were ruled justifiable, according to Daily News
homicide statistics.

The 2007 total means the territory remains one of the most violent places
under the American flag.

The Virgin Islands homicide rate per capita is 42 homicides for every
100,000 residents. The national rate is 5.5 slayings per 100,000
residents.
