hey.....i'm jamaican
first of all, please don't try to talk like those ridiculous actors who play jamaicans in the movies.....we don't use phrases like "ya mon" or "irie!" in our everyday language...the only place you might actually find that is at a hotel or craft market
just be normal....i'm sure you speak english, we do too. speak to your dad in english, he'll probably appreciate it.
by 'talking jamaican' you probably mean patois (pronounced 'pat-wa'), our dialect based loosely on english, african, spanish and french words.
being a dialect, it may be kinda hard for you to understand or speak patois at first. please don't try too hard! >> there's nothing worse than a tourist in jamaica trying fruitlessly to speak patois..
but just in case you feel lost in jamaica, there's a great dictionary/glossary of patois terms and phrases at this site. http://www.jamaicans.com/dictionary/template.php?t=display
hope this helps....!! :) |

What language do you speak? You do not speak Jamaican. Jamaicans speak English. If you wish to speak the dialect which every one has then Keep talking to your dad and you will understand.
BTW Jamaicans are very intelligent people so be yourself and you will be accepted |

The Jamaican dialect sounds closer to an Irish/Scottish accent.... If you think in that mannor you'll be pretty close to it. |

Only Jamaicans can talk Jamaican (patois). It is a lilting kind of song and they talk so you don't understand. |

They speak English - with a STRONG Jamaican accent. I had a hard time understanding their English. It was quite funny when we went there on our Honeymoon - they would say something simple like "good morning". I would look at my husband all confused like "WHAT DID THEY JUST SAY"??? My husband would look at me like I'm crazy and think I was stupid. I just had a hard time understanding with their accent. |
