Non-tourist Jamaica?

Planning a trip for the husband and I to go to Jamaica. We'd like to stay in a part of the country that is tourist free, maybe rent a cottage or apartment for the week. I'd like to be able to drive into the larger cities for shopping, but retreat someplace low-key where we can watch the sunset, shop and eat at local, small businesses and generally chill. We'd like to avoid the mega resorts, and have easy access to the whole country as we plan on renting a car. Any ideas?

we stayed in a place called bickersteth (i think im spelling wrong), it was local, no tourist, however a quick drive to mobay if we wanted the tourist activities. we loved it. im talking waking in the morning with the distant sounds of roosters crowing and people roasting breadfruit. sitting out on the veranda watching the local routine (people washing, talking, cooking, cleaning porches). watching the sun shine over the gigantic and plentiful coconut and banana trees. and no loud blurred noises of buses and cars clogging the streets and clogging the senses. i agree with you. staying in the local areas is the best way.

no part of JA is tourist free and you should really speak to a travel agent about your plans, they might be able to better advise you on where you should stay. travelers must always take precaution wherever they go, especially if they're not familiar w/the place. forget renting a car, if you get lost out there it can get risky.

I see where some one is recommending a Villa in Portland, but they don't get the idea of what you r want, My good friend no part of Jamaica is tourist free, Tourist travel all over Jamaica, Your best bet is to hook up with the Local in the rural area rs,their you will fine one and two tourist, You can rent a furnish room some of they carry hot and cold water.some only carry cold water with a Fan to cool you of if it get hot, Your best bet is to stay in Saint James,Montego Bay is the Capital and their are lot of things to see and do if you Rent a Car, to rent a car and a furnish room will cost you about
six hundred US dollars for the week. For renting a car
you can call Yadah Tours & car rental at 876-952-5319 or 876-383-5923 For Rooms you can call Mr Gordon at 876-953-7611 or 876-374-6998 you can also
email Mr Gordon at boy_jam_arch@yahoo.com you can also email the car rentals at nuako@cwjamaica.com

Portland is pretty low key and beautiful, it truly is a wonderful parish. However, the road network is such that you might not have very easy access to the rest of the country. I would recommend the South Coast--
St. Elizabeth i.e. Black River and Treasure Beach. Those areas do attract tourists, but not the sun and sand types that want to hang out at nude beaches. The tourists in those areas are generally, quiet, nature loving types. The beaches and rivers in the area are very good.
Also, the South Coast is generally less mountainous, so you the road network is better.
You can also try the Parish of St. Andrew, which is connected to Kingston. Places like Irish Town are very beautiful and natural, and also close enough to Urban Centers. Irish Town is very mountainous though, so although the views are awesome, the roads can be a bit scary. However, for the small town feel, Irish Town rules!!!

A villa in Portland. It is beautiful and not as commercial as other parts, but you still have access to civilization. The roads to get there are not the best in terms of potholes. If you can get one of the villas by Blue Lagoon right on the water, trust me it is pure heaven and I live in Jamaica. Go to Boston for the original jerk pork or chicken.

negril is beautiful as well, but more tourist go there, but it has one of the most beautiful stretch of beach in the world and a breathtaking sunset. You can walk where you need to go and several places on the beach to eat. Or stay West End where I hear Tinsen Pen Hotel is to die for, no on the beach but I hear the grounds are gorgeous.

Either one you can't lose. Would necessary recommend renting a car, I would find a nice taxi man(red plates) and charter him to take you around in Portland and Negril basically walk or charter when you want to go somewhere further.

you should go to Montego Bay.....It's very nice and peaceful! Enjoy your trip

If you want to avoid the tourists (which is basicly impossible) I'd recommend the southern coast in St. Elizabeth (Lover's Leap area) or northeast coast around the Port Antonio area. St. Elizabeth is at least an hour's drive from Negril, 3 hours from Kingston, 6-7 hours from Ochie, 1/2 day from Montego Bay. PA is 2 hours from Kingston, 2 hours from Ochie, 4 hours from Montego Bay and 6 hours from Negril. Of course, all times are approximate. The bad part about your plan is renting a car. Jamaicans drive on the left side of the road. While that might sound like an easy adjustment, there are lots of round abouts and you undoubtedly wind up going down the right side of the road. I'd strongly recommend not driving there. Make arrangements with a taxi/mini bus and charter him for the day trips (leave him drive and worry about the pot holes and buses, you relax and see the sites). I'd recommend you consider the cliff side of Negril. Most of the tourist hand out on the beach side and don't go much past Rick's Cafe. From the cliffs to the round about in town you have many small shops and great local restaurants.

Somewhere in Portland, or St. Elizabeth on the south coast will worth your while buddy. Less tourist, less activities, less nightlife but more of nature, and more peace and quiet.
