Non-tourist things to do in PR?

I'm planning a long weekend get away in San Juan, PR in January. I've never been to PR, but I'm not so much interested in doing touristy stuff. I'm not interested in "old towns" or caves or stories told by tour guides about times old. I'm also not interested in off-the-chain crazy night life:) I like being around just regular people doing regular things. I appreciate any insight as to what I could do or places I could go to get a feel for the local flavor. Like what regular people in San Juan might do for fun on a Saturday or Sunday during the day. Spanish isn't an issue. Because of my background, I understand it completely. My speaking isn't great, but I can get by. Thanks in advance.

If you want to experience the 'Real Life' than get out of San Juan. You should rent a car & get a map & drive to the small towns. Try going to the central part of the island. & I will give you a link a events. Try finding when a small town is having a local festival & going to one. Also everytown has a rooster fighting colliseum. Try going to a cockfight, this is a huge sport in PR. Also basketball is big & most towns have a basketball arena too w/ local games going on all the time. Ride a 'Paso Fino' horse if you can or at least see one. They look like they walk wierd but it is the smoothest ride. You can go to a local beach which is called a 'balneario'. & try laying on the beach in a hammock. Go to Rincon beach to cheack out the local surf scene. Also some people will go fo a day down to a river & swim in the river, drink & grill food all day. Definitely eat all the local food b/c it is delicious. & PR is known for selling delicious food from kiosks. At night go to a local backery & buy a fresh loaf of bread & also enjoy some delicious puerto rican coffee, its almost like expresso but better. Pick some tropical fruit from a tree, just make sure u know what it is. Oh try quenepas. Or eat a 25 cent 'Limber' w/ the kids. You can even stay in a 'Parador' these are like a country Inn & you will get a more real feeling of the island. & listen for the coqui at night.

You can even go to a local bar in a small town. It wont be crazy nightlife like San Juan. Just nice people having drinks & dancing. Try dancing salsa with someone or go somewhere w/ a live salsa band. Or even grab an instrument w/ a group of people & make your own music. It would be nice to go w/ someone from around there b/c it would be easier to be shown around, but u can do it on ur own too. Just be careful & aware of your surrondings. Dont go into any 'caserios' housing projects. You can also go to 'La Parguera' in Lajas in the Southeast. It is a bioluminescent bay that glows. The one in Vieques glows much more but is a tourist attraction. La Parguera is a local attraction. It is like a local carnival/fair w/ food stands & games, etc, where people hang out. You can watch a dominoes game or join in on 1. There is a lot to do, you just have to find it. Life tends to be slower in the small towns & can be boring but there is plenty to do if you want to. ALso there are alot of sights to see that tourist do Not go to. LIke caves, waterfalls, etc. Check out Flickr group- Puerto Rico: Off the Beaten Path, I will include the link too. & look at photos & maybe you will see something you want to see. ENJOY! PR is amazing!

We took a bus into Old San Juan and just walked around on the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan. We had fun just people watching. You can take a walk on the beach and meet some interesting characters, like talk to some of the food vendors.

Check to see if they have any outoor markets going on. Good place to mingle with the locals.

If I can think of any thing else, I'll add to this post.

Have a great trip. But you are missing out if you don't visit
the El Morro Fort.)

Drive away from San Juan until you find the beach. The further away from San Juan you get, the more of the island you will see.

Non turism places? No night life?

Well, we go to the movies, to the malls, to get diner. To parks to enjoy time with kids. Others look for sports events or cultural festivals around the island. Motocycle owners like to cross several towns up and down the mountains in medium to large groups.

Bottom line up front: Save your money and don't go at all. Regular folks in the island do enjoy those same things that tourists go there for as well, clubbing, drinking, internal tourism, the beach, ect. If you are not into none of those then you can go to church or perhaps walk up and down the mall with not apparent reason, just as many folks do in the island. Other than that you will find that the regular puertorican lives behind bars because of the ramping rate of criminality in the island, and the narcos everywhere, yes that is what happens outside the nice tourist and hotel areas in San Juan. Just dont waist your money going there, especially if you don't have a contact there already. Just my two cents.
