OK to drink the water in Puerto Rico? |
I've heard nightmare stories of traveling to Mexico only to spend your vacation within 2 feet of your toilet. Is this the case in Puerto Rico or is the water the same as in the continental US? Additional Details One more thing.....I plan to drink bottled water no matter what but I guess I need to know if I have to be super careful (like not eating lettuce because it's washed in the water, etc). Thanks! |

Yes Puerto Rico's water is safe to drink 100%. PR is part of the US & they follow the same US standards for regulating & cleaning the water. Actually I live i Philadelphia & I dont drink the tap water here b/c it tastes nasty. But I will drink it in PR b/c it tastes better & cleaner. Even my toddler son drinks the water when we go & has never gotten sick.. its safe.
-Some other islands(like D.R.) & countries(like mexico) are not ok though |

I've always lived in PR and you don't have to worry about that. We don't drink tab water directly , but we make coffee with it, wash our vegetables, fruits etc etc We drink distilled water, I suggest you go to the local supermarket and buy the 1 gallon bottle water(which is local water but it's 100% safe!) If you don't trust that you still can get Aquafina, Dasani, Fiji, Perrier, St. Pellegrino etc etc Don't worry, you won't get any travelers diarrhea lol! |

It is safe to drink. only thing that the chlorine is only .05 higher that it should. Urban areas and rural ares are different, even so its safe to drink, you better off rural water. Not much is seen cases seen that someone have a bad digestion.
But hey, you want a pure "clean water", go for bottled water |

If you travel 200 miles in any direction you may find some bacteria in the water that are different to those bacteria your organism is used to get. some of these may prove to be a "nightmare".
Purchase bottled water at PR or any location to be safe. Some puertorricans drink bottled water or instal special filters or destilators because they do not trust the water of the public system (PRASA or AAA), that is a fact. |

I live here and to tell you the truth, it is advisable not to drink the water from the tap. No matter what restaurant you eat in or the hotel you stay in, you have to ask for bottled water.
Here there are many brands such as:
Dasani
Apress
Deer Park (Office Max sells this brand and it is excelent)
American( this is in Walgreens and is good too)
If you are on the street buy bottled water.
I can not drink the water from the tap because I get sick if I do, so I have to buy bottled water. If you do decide to prepare something to eat for yourself or your family use bottled water for cooking and making coffee, tea and any other drinks. |

I travel a LOT, and honestly, after having a bad experience in more than one place - I always drink bottled water. Even some places in the US the water is sketchy - it won't make you sick because of bacteria, but it is full of chemicals that they use to treat the water. Bottled water is a much safer and healthier way to go - and you won't have to fret over getting sick. |
