One week in the Caribbean: looking for suggestions where to go.?

We live in the Caribbean in the British Virgin Islands and we are very overworked. We've finally been given a holiday in May for 1 week. We want somewhere not too exclusive and posh - any sort of accomodation will do. We were thinking Puerto Rico. Need somewhere with a fair amount of things to do, don't want to sit on the beach all day. Any suggestions? Also has to be accessible. We were also thinking about St Maarten, Guadeloupe, and Guyana.

I think the best place in the world is the BVI! But if you want some place with more to do, then Puerto Rico is for you..Nightlife, gambling, day trips to interesting places like the Camuy Caves, Rain Forest, Phospherescent Bay. Also, lots of shopping and super good restaurants. Since where you live has the best beaches, I wouldn t even bother to go to a beach in PR...There is also the Bacardi Rum Factory Tour and vists to Old San Juan..which is a great walking town..
I lived in San Juan for many years and wished I could live where you live...
St Maarten, Guadeloupe, etc(you mentioned them) do not have alot to do at all..maybe more than the BVI, but not by much..
Contact the PR Tourist Board, they have lots of B and B to stay in if you prefer that to a large hotel..

First of all avoid Puerto Rico. Definitively not. Obviously the same for Haiti. And I will add Jamaica.

For lots of things to do you have Cuba, but well... you know is Cuba.

For dancing, party, beaches and low budget definitively Dominican Republic (Punta Cana - Bavaro, Bayahibe, Puerto Plata - Cabarete, whatever).

Martinique and Guadaluope may be a good choice if you sepak French.

The small island are mostly beaches and no more than beaches and all inclusive hotels.

Try Trinidad and Tobago. Two islands in one. Trinidad is more cosmopolitan, Tobago is more laid back.

hombre_riendo
try Aruba and you won't regret it.

If you are interested in the US you should consider Key West, Fla. It will certainly give you a lot to see... Have you considered a catamaran cruise...? It would be a perfect way to spoil yourself. Enjoy your vacation time.
