Depends...are you just going for the beach and just the beach....if so you can pick Punta Cana. If however, you want to visit more towns, museums, etc, Puerto Plata is your best bet. LIke someone above me said, in Punta Cana the closest town is about 40 miles away which means you more than likely will not be leaving the resort at all. Puerto Plata has more activities to do.

Well both are very beautiful places, with wonderful views
but if I was you I'll pick Punta Cana and try it out.
the view is awesome. I know you'll loved it.

Madie
ive been to both. PUNTA CANA ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!

Punta Cana has the most beautiful beach of the Island. White sand with turquoise blue water. You can walk on the beach for several hours without interruption.

i have been to both and punta cana has nicer beaches. other than that, both are very similar. there is not much to do if you leave your resort in either place but i felt a bit safer leaving the resort in punta cana.

When I went I booked a hotel/air pachage at www.travelcuse.com. I would highly recommend checking it out!

Puerto Plata is better for the size of the beaches and for what to do outside the resort (Ocean World, city,Isabella de Torre cacbe car and so many excursions you like to do).
Punta Cana the hotels are OK but there is nothing to see or discover outside the resort the town is 39 miles away!....
Your choice.

Punta Cana is a more popular place that Puerto Plata, a lot of more American go to Punta Cana. There are a lot of High end hotels and no matter where you go in D.R. beaches are beautiful and hot with white sand and blue water. Puerto Plata is more for people who vacation in the D.R, but it doesn't mean you are not going to have fun. D.R is a lot of FUN.
