Parents moving back to Trinidad. Should they build or buy?

After 25+ years in the States my parents are looking to move back to Trinidad within the next 3 to 4 years. They were looking to buy a home but now they are leaning towards building. They want to live just outside Port of Spain( Maraval, Arouca, Maracus, Diego Martin) and not too far south. Which would be the better option for them? We have alot of family that can oversee their home while it's being built since they will still be in the states and cannot travel too much back and forth. What's the pros and cons with building vs buying in Trinidad?

curious!
Right now the cost of steel and cement has skyrocketed! Personally I would prefer to buy a house and renovate it as necessary. Building a house means:-

Town and Country approvals
Lenghtly construction process
Costly construction materials
Labour
Unsrcupulous workers

The only advantage is that they can build their dream house to their specifications.

I live in Diego Martin, its the BEST!!

Build. You get what you want and yuh sure that it done right. You don't want after the hurricane to find out that they used no support beams and they nail dong the sheets.
T&C will take 3mts. faster if you know someone.
oh and is Maracas eh ... yeah after that valley yuh might want to consider Diego lol
MARACAS VALLEY IS DE BEST !!!!!

Aouca is WAYYY off from P.O.S

Depends on how much they are looking to spend. Right now real estate is crazy. It's pretty much jsut as expensive to build that it is to buy depending on the area.

Maraval and Diego Martin are ridiculously expensive and not that much space available. If they really want those areas, they will have to buy because there isn't much free land space to build on, everything is pretty much developed.

If you are thinking further east, Arouca Arima etc, there is more liklely a chance of buying land in order to build. There are a lot of residential communities now in the east. for the more pricey side, there is Trincity which has access to the biggest mall, golf course etc. Prices are really high and it's not as generous when it comes to space.

Furhter east, like Arima, there is a lot of land available. D'Abadie is a nice area where they can buy or build.

Chaguanas is a pretty good area to build also.

Pros and cons.... price doesn't really factor because they're both expensive!!

It more depends on the area they're looking at and how much space they want.
If they want to be accessible to P.O.S then they will have no choice but to buy because there is not really alot of land laying around like that. Land space in the city is more for commercial.

If they're looking for a nice spread... they will have to move further east (which i would prefer) or more central.

Also, they're a lot of gated communities now, alot in the east.

Good Luck :-)

hottawarrior - win lose or draw
i would suggest that they build, if they can find land in an area that they like, but either way, building or buying...its going to cost you pretty much the same these days.

i'll suggest Chaguanas or there abouts, as most of the places on the east west corridor are extremely expensive.

Right now in T&T, real estate is at it's highest.
Not saying this will happen in your case, but l just want to share ah lil something that happened to a friend of the family.
The man living in the U.S, working hard and sending his money for his brother to build. The brother take all the man money and extend "his" house, buy car and do everything else beside what he supposed to do, all the while giving the man updates about the progress of his house. The man decide to come home and check out his house. .....right now he is walking the streets of Tobago.....mad like hell.
I think you and your parents should do a google search on property/land for sale in Trinidad in the areas they're looking for and get an idea from up there, then decide.
