Puerto Rico: Do you think PR will be pushed into statehood b/c of Gov Acevedo's Indicment?

I just heard that Governor Anibal Acevedo Vila was arrested on indictment charges. He was up for re-election & he was supporting the commonwealth status. Now that he will be out does this mean his opponent who favors statehood will win?? & if he wins, then he will push us into statehood right? What do you think of this?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080327/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/puerto_rico_governor_3
------------------------------------

I am very against PR becoming a state. I would like to see the commonwealth status improved or become independent. If you disagree & you want to know why I feel this way then you an read my reasoning here:

He has not been arrested yet, he will submit himself to the authorities tomorrow (Friday) morning.
---
Due to the indictment he is expected to be replaced by another candidate. The names that are commented to replace him include actual Caguas, PR major William Miranda Marin and a current candidate for Senator at Large who was formerly the Secretary of the Consumer Affairs Department.

Luis Fortuño, candidate from PNP party was expected to win over Anibal Acevedo Vila (AAV); and is highly probable that would defeat more easily William Miranda Marin. Against the other candidate the election may be more close, but still I think Fortuño will win.
---
Fortuño will push for statehood no matter what happens with AAV. He would push for it even if the FBI dropped the investigation and no charges were found/applied.

There is no correlation between a corupt governor and the statehood. The statehood is a decision that has to be made by the US goverment. Your are trying to correlate things that are not parralel...statehood is one thing and corruption is another topic....stop speculating ..........behind Acevedo's acusations there is no conspiracy to bring statehood to Puerto Rico.....The PNP can not bring statehood to Puerto Rico!!!! they are not trying that !!!!......they just want to win the next elections!!!! Is as simple as that!!!.....there is no statehood conspiracy behind it .........State hood is decided in the US congress not in Puerto Rico........besides the odds for that to happen are almost null at this moment........

Here comes the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!

For PR to become a state this is what it needs to happen:

1.Statehood has to be aprroved by the US senate.

2.Senators are assigned in congress to represent Puerto Rico.

In all this process there is not a single Puerto Rican deciding anything!!!!

3.How the seats in congress are assigned?.This is the process....... The US constitition assigned senators to US congress by the population of each state...Puerto Rico is the 27 most populated US territory behind Kentucky...If Puerto Rico became a state...... the US constitution will assigned 6 seats in congress due its popuation size......Here comes the twist....SEATS IN CONGRESS ARE NOT CREATED !!!!!!!!!!!! they have to be substracted from other states.........Now......analized this!!!!

Wich state would be willing to loose a position in the senate for a Puerto Rican!!!........

ask an american if they are willing to give 6 setas in congress to Puerto Rico..............

ask the big companies!!!! the ones that put people in congress if they are willing to loose a seat for a Puerto Rican senator.....

Then ask both the republican party and the democrat if they are willing to loose 6 seats and in congress with no guarantee that the seats will remain equaly supporting their party ....

you can argue that Hawaii did it.....but hawaii and alaska became states simustaniously.....they entered balanced (hawaii republican and Alaska democrat)........

So there is no correlation between Acevedo and Statehood The PNP just wants the money and the power thats it......they ALL KNOW they cannot bring statehood!!! .......they just dont say anything!!!! Im in favor of statehood but im not ignorant of the reality!!!! And I dont like the PNP!!!! Because they promise something they know they cannot do......

Why are you afraid if PR becomes a state? You give me the impression that you don't even live in PR. Why don't you?

When I graduated from college (UAA Mayaguez), I had to move to the US because I simply couldn't find a job in PR. Opportunities in PR to succeed are really slim.

Every time I go to PR I feel sad. Sad because I see it worse, more crime, more garbage in the streets, more poverty, more public housings. Sports in schools hardly exist, animal rights doesn't exist.

If Puerto Rico becomes a state I feel puertoricans will finally have the opportunity they deserve to succeed and grow in life.

i don't think PR will ever become a state. the PuertoRicans are too proud for that and im not sure how much it would benfit them. i also don't think they will become independent b/c being a common wealth has its perks (i think?)

What comes around goes around...

What you sow so will you reap...

Him and Sila tried their whole governorship to get Dr. P.R. accused of corruption, and now we see who the real corrupt one is...

Nahh...he's not even going to be charged....

The "L" Word
Statehood cant not be pushed onto Puerto Rico. In order for it to be considered the island would have to vote for it overwhemingly (like 80%) before Congress looks into it. Even so, Congress must vote the island into the Union per the laws of the Constitution. Highly unlikely they will vote for very proud and nationalist nation with their own language and culture.

Statehood will continue to lose as long as their is a national identity in Puerto Rico.
