Puerto Rico different from States?

I've been asking alot of questions about Puerto Rico because I plan on moving there next summer. probably in Carolina, PR. Everyone gives me good info about PR but, they always say it soo different from the states...What exactly do people mean by this? How is the lifestyle, people, environment different from here in the States? Is it anything someone can't really get used to if they haven't experienced it before?? Thanks for your help. Everyone =)
Additional Details
I was looking at apartments next to an international airport called "Luis Muñoz Marin".

Mr. Vitamin C
Well the environment itself is different in the sense that unlike most parts of the U.S. Puerto Rico is an Ex-Spanish colony. Spanish is still the predominant spoken language. And, obviously it's a caribbean island.

Don't listen much to this "Aim High" person..she is just a mungiecake and a woman.

Well it all depends Puerto Rico is Great for Vacations and if You have a Good Education and a Car..You will Love it...

What area of Carolina are you Moving to? Carolina has heavy traffic...so prepare to be in traffic jams from 6am until 8am and from 4pm until 5pm..

Basically what they mean, is that PR is way too disorganized and unplanned in comparison to a state. Yes, we got pretty much the same things most states have, but they are not as efficient as they are supposed to be thanks to the crappy government we have. With our culture expect the same: very disorganized, no discipline, for example if you find yourself in a 4 way stop sign crossing, don't expect any courtesy, everybody will drive in at the same time and if you lack good reflexes chances are you'll crash. On the other hand, we are handful of drinkers, party goers and lazy bastards. Life in PR is pretty much laid-back in the country side, unless you're in the metro area which is like hell, since its overcrowded and concrete is everywhere. Now, other than that crimes are high, but most of them are drug-related crimes, the rest are mostly robberies which are becoming quite common because of the economy, so make sure you're new home is well equipped with security devices. But life is great, temperatures are an average 85Fdegrees all-year around, imagine that!, We are surrounded by beaches, amazingly beautiful natural landscapes, great nightlife if you're in metro, great shopping, since shopping is a national sport other than politics, and in general we do live in paradise. And I can tell you this because I've been in the US, I've lived there, I have also been all over the world and the truth is that PR or any other place in the Caribbean is freaking paradise, we are happy, the food is amazing, the beaches, the Latin-tropical environment is something that most people in the world dream of, and can't have. So take a chance and adventure yourself, I'm sure that you will cry the day you leave PR, its a sin to leave PR.

in puerto rico, a car is a must because there is no way you could walk to the supermarket from your house
and they don't point a gun at you if u honk...
maybe in the bad areas, but i doubt youll get near them
well the times ive been there with my english only speaking friends, they were fine and people did speak english, not great, but pretty good...
and most people dont have 8 children...wtf.

I have been to PR many times because both of my parents and most of my aunts and uncles live there. From what I've heard, Carolina is not one of the safest towns in PR. It's much more like a city which means that it has more crime. :( Recently, they started charging sales tax in items in PR just like they do in many cities here in the US. The prices of things like groceries and clothing is also much more. The climate is great but they get a lot of rain in the spring/fall months.

I've never been there, but I'm sure, if you want to, you will adjust.

It's a Spanish colony, and I guess there is still a bunch of poverty, but I'm sure you'll adjust and fit in as best you can...and enjoy the adventure.

Puertorrican are unique. Puerto Rico is the happiest place in the world. The people are happy always. THe Restaurants here, telephone carriers, brands, etc is all the same. DIrectv, At&T, KFC, McDonalds, Churchs, Burger King, Popeyes, Long John Silver, Applebees, Ponderosa, Sizzler, Dennys, Chilis, it is all the same that state. the only diferrent are the people but you will like it. here some things are in english some in spanish and it is very random.

For example: you go to a denny in Caguas, PR and the menu is in english and the next week you go to another in San Juan ans the menu is in english.

People talks spanish. but also talks english.

Aim High
Crappy roads...it's like driving on the moon.

Crappy drivers...the worst in the world, and if you honk at anyone...well....just pray they don't have a gun!

Not many people speak English-the all say they "understand" it, but no one wants to speak it.

Many women with like eight kids...before they turn 23!

Trash everywhere.

Reggeatong...EVERYFREAKINWHERE!!!

Graffiti everywhere

People saying how they are proud to be boricua, but throw garbage everywhere.

Cops who don't do anything when people are parked where they shouldn't-and people here park all over the place-sidewalks, handi-cap spots, everywhere!

It's a nightmare, I'm getting the hell out of here come September!!!

nicky, I actually live in PR. I think I know a little more than you on the subject. The asker is thinking of moving here, not vacationing here. I actually live in Carolina. As a tourist you only see the nice things, when you live here, not so much.
