Puerto Rico entrance - need detailed answers? |
My cousin wants to move to Puerto Rico from the U.S. We looked into it and saw that he won't need a passport, which is nice. But we have a couple of very specific questions about what happens when he arrives there (by ship). What identification will he be required to present? Do they just look at the ID to verify that it's him or do they run it via computer to the the state it came from for validity? Is birth certificate needed? Is social security card needed? How long does the whole process take?
Thank you for any help or information. |

Why is he coming by ship & not airplane? & why why are you so concerned about the social security card & ID. If he was a US citizen he would have this stuff. It sounds like your cousin is not a US citizen & he has a fake state ID & is trying to enter PR. I highly recommend he does Not try this. PR is the US & they have good security like the US. |

I come to San Juan everyday and at the piers where she ships arrive, they have posted a large neon sign stating 100% ID check is made. That is they check you ID using documents that you have that will clearly identify you. Such documents are:
birth certificate, driver's licence, social security card.
If you have other ID's available with a valid address, recent photo and all information is pertinant and is the same on all the other id's then that will do.
The airport asks for a valid driver's license no matter what state it is from. But the cruise ships require more. The time from checking ID and leaving the ship may vary. This is due to how many passangers will be getting off, if everyone's ID is in order with no problems. It is like you say from your home to the store you take 10 minutes but it may take more than that due to a possible traffic jam, accident or what ever has happened. So this will take time depending on the circumstances.
Best for you is that you get in touch with the travel agency that you are using or direct with the customer services of the cruise ship so that they may inform you correctly because each port of each island is different and not all requirements are the same. |

PR is part of the US... a territory. If you are a citizen you won't need a thing.
HOWEVER... if you're going to live in PR, get your passport NOW...so you can enjoy the other islands without hassle! |

I agree. I lived in PR a couple of times and visited. As a US Commonwealth, all PR citizens are really US citizens. They are eligible to apply for and get US passports, and must follow the Selective Service Registration laws.
If the ship is going from a US port to a PR port, you may not have to have much in the way of an ID. But if you intend to work or go to school in PR, you may want to take the following:
Certified Birth Certificate
Government issued picture ID
Social Security Card
You won't need a Passport, but if you want to travel to other countries' protectorates (like the British Virgin Islands) in the Carribean, you will need one.
Best of luck. |

You need social security, birth certificate and passport for yourself. ( Personal Use )
If you are US citizen they will NOT check or make you go trough any process at all.
I lived in Puerto Rico for 18 years therefore I know how all this works, if you have any questions feel free to IM me or E-mail me, whichever you like! |

After Jan. 8th, the same rules that apply for entrance to the mainland U.S. will apply to Puerto Rico... he will need a PASSPORT and he should also take along a CERTIFIED COPY of his BIRTH CERTIFICATE for any other needs such as a driver's license etc.
Why are you asking this on Yahoo Answers? If you need a REAL ANSWER... then CONTACT THE STATE DEPT... or at least check their web site... ALL YOUR ANSWERS ARE ON THERE.
If your "cousin" really IS a U.S. citizen there should be no problems but if your "cousin" is trying to sneak into Puerto Rico, thinking he can then get to New York the back way and come into the U.S. he is in for some REAL surprises... like BEING ARRESTED. |
