Question about going to Havana,Cuba...?

My best girlfriends and i have been planning to go away on vacation next year to the carribean when we all will be officially 18.It will just be the 5 of us and one of the girls brother and his best friend.Everyone has decided on Cuba but i'm really having 2nd thoughts about it.I did my own research and the country just seems and looks really depressing.Everyone wants to stay at Hotel Nacional De Cuba because of it's history but the views seem for lack of a better word sad.Even though that hotel is 4-5 stars it looks like a 1 star.I'm so sorry if this offends anyone on here but thats what it seems like to me...all the buildings look abandoned and worn out.Do you think San Juan, Puerto Rico would be a better option? for just having a better good time in general?

If you go to Cuba, you should not go with the idea of just having a good time. We are very oppressed in our own country and the fact of people going there and later saying: "I have been in Cuba. I know" is irritating for us

In India, during British rule, the British went there for different reasons. In Calcutta people were dying of starvation and according to a witness, the British didn't care.
If somebody mentioned the famine in one of their clubs they got upset, because for them hearing about the famine was an unpleasant subject

They didn't care of the people dying on the streets

Tourists go to Cuba to enjoy many privileges that we don't have. There is a touristic apartheid in Cuba

Assume that you are in south Africa during apartheid and enjoy the visit

Well, you know. Since bad old fidel lost the support of the Russians he has gone very low. Our country is worse than ever

Why do you want to go there ?

Your money would help bad fidel to keep its regime working. Why do you want to cooperate with a sworn enemy of the USA ?

Now poor old bad fidel is sick and his Revolution is wrecked, but still insists in spreading his absurd and ridiculous propaganda to whoever wants to hear it

Well I don't know what you are used to but despite the exterior view of the Hotel Nacionale it is certainly very nice inside. It is also very expensive. It has lovely views over the harbour.

Cuba is very mixed and is certainly run down.Havana was clearly once a very lovely city that is now crumbling although they are doing renovations. But that is the charm. The people and country are really fascinating, and the music is every where. Have a look here before making up your mind.

However, if you are wanting everything to be immaculate then Cuba is not for you.If you like dancing and music there is plenty of that. I haven't been to Puerto Rico but would be surprised if that was very different.

OLA little Marie . let me say that the first thing i applaude you for is DOING YOUR OWN RESEARCH . IVE BEEN TRAVELLING FOR YEARS AND IM FAR FROM AN EXPERT . in fact , the more places i go ( CUBA INCLUDED ) and the more people i meet , the more ignorant i realize i am and how much i dont know which is one of the main reasons i love to travel so much in the first place. THE EDUCATION....... READ my response to the q is habana a nice place to vacation . ,,,.IN TRUTH , although cuba maybe the most beautiful gem in the carribbean , my concience and GROWING conviction has been that atleast for the present time ( out of respect for the cuban people ) gringos or anyone coming to cuba should not view it as a cheap tropical disney land where greedy capitalistic touriSts can exploit the inexpensive pleasures of the country while grandma juana cant even feed her 3 grand children on the 2 pounds of rice that fidel gives her every month AND popi gets 5 years of being tortured in prison for complaining about it . UNDERSTAND THIS POINT AND YOU ATLEAST BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND WHY MANY CUBANS HAVE A PROBLEM WITH AMERICANS WANTING TO GO THERE . ( ridding the world of this capitalism is what the goal of communism is supposed to be and what castro did to battista and the american government when the rebels took over , but you can see how hypocritical it is as the castro boys have again sold out to very foriegn intrests they once aborted from the island realizing that the " CUBAN ELITE " cant survive without the capitalists ). anyway , Cuba is much better experienced than explained and what better way to truly appreciate the freedoms you have unless you experience first hand the hardships of others living under such a system . to MY SHAME , i lacked that understanding until long after i went and though i am in no way saying you should not feel a stretch of beautiful cuban sand under your pretty little feet OR A DANCE FLOOR, i am saying just be sensitive to how much sun block you put on . ya dig/? ( if you are american , going to p . rico is like crossing a state line and though it will be much easier than getting in to cuba through a different country . BUT . if you ONLY want to a see a little more than uncle sam with a tan dancing salsa ON nice sand .GO .,. but you wont get near the education youll get travelling to cuba .) BUT WAT DA HECK DO I KNOW ?

First of all what country is everyone from? Americans cannot go legally to Cuba. I went myself as a us citizen easily but it was via Mexico.

I am an experianced world traveler. I do not recommend Cuba for your first trip abroad. It simply is not the place for you on many levels.

Yes it is old, yes it is worn down, yes they will not have the things a young person such as yourself are looking for this special vacation. You would need to research and learn how things are done and be able to deal with the many mishaps that will happen.

Cuba is a beautiful place, with wonderful people and a crumbling way of life. Oh Yes their 5 star is an American 2 star but does that matter?

I personally loved Cuba, but it simply is not right for this trip for you and I think Puerto Rico is an armpit myself. Have you thought of some of the other islands???

If you do do it. I recommend Varadaro too. They have package deals there online.

Edit-Very surprised about the negative thumbs. I have said I adored the country and the people but do not think it appropriate for a beginer traveler.

There should be no thumbs down on an honest well informed opinion.

I did Cuba after I did 50 other countries. I was able to appreciate and at least try to understand some of the peoples hardships. I left completely in love with the place.

However, others may not. The question asker is 18 and has different desires for her vacation.

Hello Marie
Well, if you want to visit United States, then go to Puerto Rico.
If you want to experience a country with beautiful people, lots of
culture, museums, galleries, palaces, castles, monuments, churches, convents, night life, lots of music everywhere, beautiful beaches and more, then go to Cuba.
Better than Hotel Nacional you should stay at NH Parque Central Hotel, right in front of Central Park Havana. You won´t need to rent a car because everything will be walking distance. Old Havana is a World Heritage Site, so you will find in this area that most of the buildings have been restored and most everything is in a very good shape. You will find other parts of the city in process of restoration but is taking a long time since Cuba does not have the support of other countries due to the embargo by the United States.
If you care for dancing, party and beautiful beaches, then go to Cuba, you will love it, specially if you are interested in culture.
Another option would be to go to Varadero, very close to Havana, very nice hotels, spectacular beach and then you could go for a day trip to Havana.
Best to you.

Cuba is fascinating, Cubans are wonderful and so welcoming. Havana is so incredible with its history. Since you most likely want to beach it, you might consider a few days in Havana and the other days at Varadero which has incredible white sand beaches that go on forever. There are packages available which give you the best of both worlds. Check the links below. Chances are if you go to Cuba once youwill return. Check trip advisor for reviews of Hotel Nacional.
