Sandals resort for Honeymoon . . . ?

I am planning my Honeymoon, but I'm having problems choosing the resort. My Fiancee wants to stay at a Sandal's resort in Jamaica. He also wants to keep costs down.

So my choices are any resort in the world . . . as long has it is a Sandal's in Jamaica . . . Great, huh! *sigh*

If you have any experience or knowledge, of the Sandal's resorts in Jamaica, could you please help me out?

I am afraid of him just picking the cheapest resort and not really looking into it. I know Jamaica has high crime rate too, but he says we will just stay on the resort and never leave . . .

Which resort did you stay at? What kind of room did you have? Did you like it? What was the good/bad? Which resort would you recommend? What to watch out for?

Thanks!

Please only answer if your answer is about SANDALS, not any other options in Jamaica.

Thanks!

I'm no expert, but have stayed at or visited:
Breezes Bahamas (cable Beach)
Riu Bahamas
Sandals MoBay (twice)
Sandals Royal Carib (visited twice)
Riu Carib Cancun
Sandals St Lucia

Sandals is not the best buy in town from a dollar standpoint, but offers "stuff" that a RIU does not. RIU's are hotel chains that have an all inclusive package, but are not geared towards keeping the guests on the property and entertained 24 x7 They are usually located in areas where it is expected you will wander off the grounds and enjoy seeing the local sites. Sandals on the other hand is a resort, and once you are on the property, you can be reasonably sure that anyone you see will be either a guest or staff.
Sandals Mobay is close to the Airport, but the oldest Sandals property and is showing it's age in some areas. Of the 3 locations in MoBay, it is my favorite. HOWEVER, I recently read that once a week (Wed) they are letting cruise ships use the Sandals beach and facility. If that is true, I would avoid going there.
Sandals Royal Carib.. never stayed there, but visited twice and thought it was depressing. No where near the "fun" level at MoBay, smaller beach, more agressive natives hawking there junk, and land crabs wandering everywhere along with some real wilted peacocks.
Sandals Whitehouse is currently running a 50% off sale, which makes them right in the same price range as MoBay, but this is the newest Sandals facility on the island, and it was intended to be the upscale place to stay. I think they wound up overpriced and are cutting rates to get people in the rooms. It worked, I'm going there next week to give it a shot. Sure, it is a 90 min ride from the airport, but I'm looking at that as a "tour" I don't have to pay for.

Not knowing how bad the Hurricane tore up Cancun, if you decide to try a Riu in Cancun, there are 3. The 2 in the center of town are nice, but have almost no beach and a rough surf. Riu Caribe is a $0.70 bus ride away ( about 2 miles) and has a much calmer beach and is more "resorty" rather than like a hotel.

I would NOT return to a Breezes after our Cable Beach experience. It was just after 9/11 and they shut down half of the hotel due to cancellations and to make it easy on the maids. This also meant they lost at least 50% of the ocean view rooms ( resort is shaped like a horseshoe with the two open ends facing the ocean) and we got bumped down from a suite to a room with a view of the trees. Maids were in and out of the room at least 6 times a day to bring a bar of soap or towel. I didn't like the constant traffic in my room.

Personally, I would not go back to St Lucia. The place was OK, but overpriced for what you got. My opinion may be clouded by the fact I had a minor cardiac event while there and found out the entire country of St Lucia does not have a hospital that offers cardiac care and I would have had to be flown to Martinique if needed. Something to think about when traveling out of the US. Oh, my personal insurance would not cover any of the local Dr's care I got and was charged for because I was not admitted to a hosp.

My future husband and I are going to Sandals Negril from September 24-October 1 for you honeymoon. What I would suggest that you do, because we were in the same boat but I am the one who wanted Sandals, is check out Tripadvisor.com. They helped us out in deciding on which resort to stay at. You can look at a ton of reviews of each of the Sandals resorts and also you can ask questions in their forum that people will answer for you. I hope this helps and have a great honeymoon wherever you decide to go.

Also if you haven't gotten your passport yet and you know for sure you are going to Jamaica, I would get it as soon as possible so you have it.

If you have any other questions, let me know and I will try to help in any way I can.

You should look at Breezes resort. It is similar to Sandals and at a cheaper rate. I stayed there before for my honeymoon and had a great time.

Good luck!

We just came back from a honey moon at sandals whitehouse and I can tell you it is worth every penny. We arrived on August 13th and we were there for Hurricane Dean. We stayed in the Dutch Village on the fourth floor, room 2417 to be exact. It was concierge service and that is also worth the extra money. The hurricane did put a hamper on things for 2 days but Sandals people were great! They took excellent care of everyone and the buildings are rock solid. We didn't even fell the wind blowing when we were in the room. The food is excellent especially Giuseppe's Italian. The people are kind, considerate and if you want pamper, fun, relaxation, romance---go there. I cant Say anything bad about the place. We had to stay 5 days longer because of hurricane Dean but I didn't mind. Plus, Sandals honored their blue chip guarantee and we got a free vacation next year! This is a 5 star place. I have been to Mexico, St Thomas, St Croix, St. Marteen and Jamaica is the best. Cant wait to go back!

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I also have pictures--we took over 1000 of them!
