does it mean my vote dont count since im in your country?
I vote No
Dont get me wrong Bob has done a great deal for the profile of the country but hot a hero... isnt the order of distinction good enough ?
I think a hero should have laid down his life... died for his country is some act of patriotism (even if it means civil descent) and basically do something for the rights of the people to push then upward.
Im not sure Bob did all that... i mean apart from the peace rally... or am I just mis informed?
I think the important thing is that people want to honour him... and we dont have any other way but hero status... so lets just make a new status!!
The Jamaica peace prize or something... name the award after him... and give it to others... "The Marley Award for bravery or "The Marley Humanitary Award"... but national hero i just think its inappropriate |

YES.
A hero doesn't have to DIE in combat to earn the status. To measure heroism by DEATH, would be hypocritical of us. It is actions in life and the bravery and VALUE of those actions that matter.
Secret: You are wrong. Marcus Garvey is a national hero, and last time i checked he wasn't hung, assassinated or killed in combat. He simply put forward IDEOLOGIES that were far-reaching. The same can be said for Norman Manley and Bustamante. They formed political parties and labour unions...Thats ALL they did. If you had ANY IDEA how many freedom fighters in this world went into battle with the songs of Bob Marley you would APOLOGIZE for underestimating such a great messenger. From U.S. soldiers on patrol in iraq and afgahnistan, to Taliban soldiers, to rebels in South African in the days of aparthied. So many people value the relevance of his words to their cause.
Bob Marley WILL get his hero status as soon as the leaders who knew him as a man (in flesh and blood), pass away. Some living Jamaicans fail to show him respect, because they have little respect for artistes and musicians and popular figures. They would sooner give a crooked politician than give it to a man who was just a rasta singer and an 'entertainer'.
A man is just a man, but some men contribute more than others. |

This question was asked recently and my answer is still an unequivocal YES!
Bob Marley managed to rise to greatness during a time when reggae music and rastafarianism were under fire from our society. It was a time when "dutty dread" was a regular phrase used to describe rastafarians and Bob was not immune to such discrimination. The fact that his work and contribution is still not fully recognized and/or appreciated in Jamaica is testament that he's still facing the remnants of such obstacles.
Tourism is one of our major foreign exchange earners and even though I don't have any data, I'm sure about 1/4 of the tourists (or more) who visit Jamaica do so because of Bob Marley.
He deserves the honour and he should not have had to die "in the line of duty" to get it; he's earned it. |
