You don't have to. Because of the value of the american dollar, I'd be shocked if even 1 place didn't accept it. You can exchange, but get anything you don't spend exchanged back, or you may discover that you have a lot of "jingle" for souvenirs that you hadn't planned. It is a pain in the dairy aire trying to get currency from other places exchanged back in the US. It's a joke...we call places currency exchanges...but for the life of me I can't figure out why considering that is NOT what they do unless you're willing to pay a steep price! |

If your not going to leave the resort you dont really need to. But if you will be out and about I would . It will be much cheaper and you wont have to do the exchange in your head. Do not! exchange at the airport! You will get ripped off. The exchange is about 70 to 1. We tried to exchange at the airport and they told us it was 63 to 1. Ask your taxi driver in Jamaica to take you to get an exchange it makes things much easier and cheaper. |

It's really easy to exchange money for different currencies at a local post office............ Now the problem is finding one....... |

NO, you can't excange money at the post office...
NEVER do it at a bank......
NEVER EVER do it at the airport....
But yes, get it exchanged...your better off, and get better deals using Jamaican money. Plenty of Cambios in all the major cities. Beware of the guy on the street offering to exchange it for you though. |

No don't exchange your money. The dollar is worth more and widely excepted. Also most places can give you money back in US dollars. Vendors may not have a lot of large bills so its good to carry small bills. |

I just got back from Jamaica. DO NOT exchange your money at the airport, the exchange rate is much less (63.50 JD to 1 USD) Just make sure you have enough cash with you and pay what you need to pay at the airport and then you can convert your money over to JD's in any cambio and they give you 70 JD to 1 USD. I was there for 5 days and I converted over about 300$ which was about 22,000 JD and that lasted me for several days. I asked the same question and someone gave me this great site.

Also, print out this cheat sheet, it was a God send.

Hope this helps... its beautiful this time of year, but it rains every day around 4 for about an hour.Good luck and have fun. |

Its always a good idea to exchange some money at the airport because they will give you a receipt and on your way out you can then change back Jamaican $ to US...
I always have a some of each on me.
Travellers checks are safe and good to have also. |

As far as changing US dollars for Jamaican dollars, try to change it at a bank which gives you a fair exchange. The exchange rate at present is approximately 1 US dollar for 70 Jamaican dollars.
Usually, when I go to a foreign country, I always change my money, since you get sometimes better rates and do not stand out as a tourist too much.
One word of caution. Since the Jamaican dollar is not a very popular currency such as the Euro, you may want to exchange just enough for the trip. Second, trading Jamaican dollars for US currency may be difficult even thru a bank. So, you might as well spend those dollars or take those unused Jamaican dollars as a souvenir.
However, if you intend to go back again soon to Jamaica. no harm done. Just save any unused Jamaican dollars for the next trip. |

If you are in or going to Jamaica, then yes. I'd say the airport, or possibly the bank. |
