Well you will be safe,for you are with locals who will ensure that your stay will be a pleasant one,as the will show you the do's and don'ts and were hot and were not hot location in entertainment,trust me no one with who your staying with will let any one or any thing harm you,eg;("we don't want the American media to inflict great damage to our image", if you know what i mean,so you will be safe),just don't over do the whole touristy thing for remember Kingston is not centered around tourists trade,so don't expect to have the same experience there, just behave and blend in with the locals,were possible in code of dress,no excess amount of and if you have and jewelery,and so on.

Kingston is practically one of the better if not the better place to experience true Jamaican culture,and it will also enable you to dismiss a few Stereo thoughts that you may have had in the past,that was generated by media over sea or by web and word of mouth.
Just remember to enjoy your self,suck it all in,i think your trip in town will be one of the most educated trips, you will ever have of another country and its people,why because your not in a hotel,your with locals who can give you the real vacation.

I heard it's not a good place to visit if your not with someone with someone who lives there.

i live in jamaica , not kingston tho. It'll be fun and safe 4 u 2 stay in kingston, dont sweat it, its not all bad. its actually pretty nice at nights. u wil enjoy it

So long as you are with people that have your safety in mind, you should be fine. Just don't go off wearing expensive jewelry or carry large amts of cash (have common sense). No walking alone, going off with strangers, etc. I'd say you should be fine traveling with persons from there.
