Should I stay or should I go? |
My friend is getting married in Jamaica next year and despite being terrified of flying I was encouraged to go with my husband and eventually booked up to join them for a week. I was initially very excited and counting down the days but for a while now I had a lingering bad feeling about the whole trip, which I am sure has not been helped by the recent tragic events in Antigua. We have two children who will be staying with my parents while we go away. I keep having 'flashes' of them being left parentless and it takes my breath away. I am not sure if it is the flights that are the problems, being so far away from my children or the fact that Jamica has a serious problem with violent crime. We have been told not to leave the complex and while this would suit some people, I am sure it will drive me stir crazy. Jamaica is a place that we will never go to again and I don't see the point of going all that way if the only things to be seen are the beach and the hotel.
I have called the holiday company and they told me that if I cancelled now we would lose the deposit, and the longer we leave it to cancel the more money we would have to pay. I honestly think i want to cancel and would have done by now except fo one detail...what the hell do I do about my friend? She is looking forward to going with us, although her entire family are going so she won't be left alone. I am sure she would be very upset if we cancelled. So do I go for her and hope that everything is ok or do I cancel, sleep easily again and buy her a massive wedding present?

Jamaica is as safe as anywhere else in the world.
If you do not go, do not let it be because you are scared. Just don't involve yourself to greatly with strangers and everything should be all right.
The experience will be beautiful. |

Oh Honey, Every little ting gonna be irie! Jamaica is wonderful, the beach, food, people, all is wonderful. You will have the time of your life! You didn't say where you were staying but, all of the resorts have so may activities that will keep you busy that there's no time for sightseeing. If there is time, see Dunn's river falls. Plain old common sense and you'll be as safe as anywhere else.
Try to put your fear of flying aside and go. I'm sure the Dr. can give you a little something that would help with the anxiety. A few days in Jamaica and you'll feel so relaxed and de-stressed you'll want to go back again next year.
To help you start to look forward to your trip try going to tripadvisor.com to see what others have to say about their recent stay at your complex (resort). The kids will have a great time with Grandma and you'll come back a happier, healthier Mom.

You are using logic as you are scared of flying.
Remember that flying is safer than crossing the road.
I fly all the time once you are in the air you will wonderv what all the fuss was about - as its just boring, boring, boring.
Go and beat your fears - you cannot let them control your life like this.
If you have to go and see the doc. he/she will understand. |

Yes, crime is becoming an ever increasing deterent for holiday makers / travellers, but if you were to stay home you would only regret it later... and we regret mostly the things we don't do, than the things we do... so, JDI... get yourself over there and enjoy it. No risk, no reward! |

Get rid of all those fears, your fears have force you to grab at straws, using every thing for an excuse. You will feel worst when your friends return with stories of their wonderful, memourable adventure. With all your excuses your friends will just see you as a scared and insecure, soon they won't invite you to anywhere, as the answer will be inevitable.
Get up and go, you deserve a vacation, some excitement and some Reggae music, be sure to learn how to dance like the Jamaican ladies, your husband will be all smiles, and extremely attentive. |

I recommend you go because you will surely enjoy yourself - especially if your going for a happy occasion such as your friend's wedding. try and relax when you are on the flight. Don't think about it too much - listen to some relaxing music on some music player, relax and close your eyes and think of something else other than the flight and you will be fine. The best way to overcome your fear is to face it.
I heard about the tragedy in Antigua and to be honest I feel really bad about it but find it really strange but no-one knows when they are gonna die but that doesn't mean you should stop living. You should enjoy life right up until the day you die and not be scared of death because death is a part of life and think of it as a new beginning rather than the end because it isn't - you never really die.
Enjoy your trip. I am from Jamaica but currently living in England because my husband is british. I am going back in September to show my in-laws my country and also to show my little one to my family. You will enjoy yourself and before you know it the time would have flown by and it will be time to go back and you would be wishing you were back in JA for another week. Take care and have a fantastic trip. |

You are in the trap caused by other events - the truth is your fear of flying is causing this problem.
So, here is a fact - YOU are more likely to be killed in a car crash in this country than you are by flying.
Think of this - The pilot would not fly the plane if there was a problem.
Go and enjoy |

You should go.The recent events in Antigua were indeed tragic,i felt so sad when i learnt yesterday that the man had died. Not being Jamaican myself, i can only assume that things like that dont happen very often and i hope that i am right.Do what you think is best.Personally if it was me, i would go for my friend, put my fear behind me.No one knows when death comes so why should it frighten you?As you say you have children, just count down the days until you see them again because im completely sure you will |

My dad and his partner got married thei in november 05 and we were always told not to got out past a certain time and to stay in out complex. But too be honest we never had and troubles wandering out to shopping centres, apart from the odd person trying to sell us stuff.
I think Jamaica is just on big stereotype!
and I wouldnt think too much off the killings in antigua. Too put it straight you are probaly alot safer over there than in england! Think of all the shootings and stabbings that go on over here everyday!!!
Just go!! and see what it is like for yourself!
