there is this HUGE misconception that puerto rico has been given citizenship on a silver platter... not the case, pr was invaded by the u.s. and subsequently generations of men have been sent to fight in wars for a country who basically despised and marginalized them. throughout the industrialization process of the island tax breaks were set up for companies who set up shop down here and the truth is after a time limit about 7 years or so they can leave and have done so causing thousands of people to lose their jobs promoting an inconsistent economic picture... and the one which most americans mistake for the reality of the common person not the companies who get rich and leave.... so, "federal" taxes dont get paid down here, but we dont vote in presidential elections and there are more military bases down here than can be counted... notwithstanding all of the misconceptions about the truth of what is up down here there is also this idea that puerto ricans are lazy, dont work etc... puerto ricans are at the forefront of every field from being astrononauts to artists, look it up and you will also see that we have one of the top engineering schools in the u.s. and the graduates generally leave to the u.s. to work cause the opportunities here get capped......
but the truth is that given the taxation laws and how they are set up PUERTO RICO SUBSIDIZES U.S. PROSPERITY, THEY MAKE MILLIONS OFF THE SYSTEM A YEAR.... so should pr become a state? its irrelevant.... the U.S. will never let that happen... they would actually lose money by investing in the infrastructure and having to create fair laws for corporations to operate and export products and that will never happen.....
the US took PR as a territory given its strategic position between north and south america and access to trade routes... same reasons why the spanish defended it so hard core until they signed the autonomy papers which gave pr the right to govern itself, then the u.s. came in and took over to have that strategic control.....
so, "should it" is not the question.... "will it" is the question and NOPE is the answer... even if the the island came together and agreed that would be best- ha!- it wouldnt happen.... |

I don't think so. This is a debate that has been going in Puerto Rico for decades. I would hate to see Puerto Rico lose our identity to become just another state. The U.S. doesn't want us as a state, why would we? The day we become a state is the day I leave Puerto Rico. |

Actually, it is, for us puertoricans to decide. See Puerto Rico is el Estado Libre Asociado, and it was signed and agreed upon by then governor Luis Munoz Marin and the U.S. What el Estado Libre Asociado (ELA) or Free Associated state means, is that Puerto Rico is neither a state nor it's free, so Puerto Rico is like a small country that has democracy, governs itself, produces inner economy, but has more getting from the US than it produces for themselves. Puerto Rico has it's on identidy and culture, it was invaded by the spaniards and then in 1898, after the US fought the spaniards, the US invaded it. So I'm trying to say that Puerto Rico didn't ask to be part of the US, but there is a reason why so many countries fought for it, but they have never quite gained it. It is said it's a colony of the US, but Puerto Rico, from my point of view, will never become a state, there are far too many puertoricans agaisn't it, and if you didn't know, it is puertoricans citizens, not politicians, who decide by vote, and till this day all the times that we were given that opportunnity we have never voted for it. |

Support for statehood have consistently increased over the years, currently it is around 42 - 45% of voters. We need to keep convincing the others who support the status quo. |

Sure. We already give them money, and they can vote in the primaries. They might as well be a state. |
