Hi, Aschley,
You need to travel with some cash money to pay the small things you need to pay and the small transportation cost ( ex. bus, taxi) At your arrival at the airport you have to pay 10 us p.person and by departure 20 us p.person. For the rest you can use your atm card when you need to redraw. This will be in Dominican Pesos so just redrawwhat you need, so you can controle better your expenses. The exchange rate is for today 33,5 pesos for 1 US $. Don't change money at the hotel or on the street, this is generaly a very bad rate.
Happy to help you

You should definitely pay in pesos whenever you can! The exchange rate for pesos is excellent in the Dominican Republic & they're are many places where things are much cheaper if you can pay in pesos.
You should bring travelers checks & at least one credit card but you should avoid bring cash since you can't replace it if you it's lost. Many places take a major credit card & it can be convenient to use a credit card sometimes.
Also, make sure you change your travelers checks to pesos in a bank & never exchange them at the airport. The airports give you the worst exchange rate & the banks always give you the best exchange rate & the difference can be quite large. If necessary, you can always use an ATM machine, if you need cash. |

Pesos, I mean they do accept dollars, but if they see you paying with american money they'll charge you 10 times more, just because you are a tourist and you are paying with dollars, always have some pesos with you, if you need to exchange more money withdraw from your atm the amount you need or want, never carry a lot of money on you, and do not leave a lot of cash at the hotel either... Hve fun!!!! =) |

Okay, let this be a lesson for your trip to the DR and for all of your holidays--no matter where you go abroad.
Always use local currency. They take the USD in most places in DR, but you will always lose 5-15 percent on each transaction. ATM's are plentiful in DR, so use those. Check with your bank to see what the charges are. Make sure your ATM has a 4 digit password. You can change currency at the airport, major hotels, and there are currency exchanges.
Keep some USD on you, but do change the money you plan on spending while on the island.
I always just use the ATM's when I am travelling abroad (have done that in DR as well). My bank is good and doesn't charge me more than the standard 2 dollar transaction fee.

Pay in pesos but make sure to have U.S. dollars at hand. You never know when you may need it or need to bribe your way out of something and they would rather have dollars anyways. But there are places over there where if you need pesos you can switch your dollars for pesos. Not many people use credit cards there...but I guess it depends where you go. I would stick to dollars and pesos. |

definitely use atm's and definitely have some US dollars. US dollars will be used to pay to enter the country and also your baggage guys that carry your bags and tipping the taxi or transport driver as well. You can use both currency in the country but definitely use the atm. You get the best rate usually with your bank as the rate from dollars to pesos changes constantly. Just make sure like others have said check with your bank and tell them your traveling and check your additional fees for using for example a non wells fargo atm or something fee. also practice your bargaining skills as well. have fun and enjoy the country it is so beautiful. |

Always pay in pesos. Why would you want to pay in foreign currency (the dollar is a foreign currency in the DR).
Your best bet is to bring a few dollars cash and withdraw pesos from ATM's as you need them. ATMs give the best rates.
Traveller's checks are soooooo 90's. |
