Go to Punta Cana and stay in either Paradisus or Bavaro Palace. Golden jails??? These people are crazy! There's everything inside these resorts and people who go there want to stay in these compounds and be pampered. If they wanted to go elsewhere they would! There is no sin in wanting to go to these resorts and not going to visit the towns nearby. Some people go for the beach and the service, if being pampered and entertained is going to a golden jail then I'm for it!

It depends what you are looking for in a vacation. I agree with Gilbert..Punta Cana is beautiful but you are basically stuck at your resort. Santa Domingo is wonderful for it's history but there are no beaches. Puerto Plata on the other hand has beautiful beaches, wonderful resorts - check out www.sunvillagebeachresort.com and lots of things to do in close proximity. You can go to Ocean World, well worth the money, horseback riding in the hills, shopping in the city, visits the forts and museums and a visit to the rum factory. We had a ton of fun and kept busy and entertained the whole time but had lots of time to chill on the beach or enjoy a drink or 3 or 4 or 5 at the pool bars.

There are more locals in Santo Domingo. Punta Cana is mostly a bunch of resort complexes but it is fabulous. Sunscape the beach is a great resort. Its very reasonable as far as price is concerned, there are no wrist bands, restrictions or reservations necessary for dinner. It's great for individuals, couples and families. My agency books a lot of that resort and I also go there myself.

HI! I´m a travel agent in the Dominican Republic, to answer your question I have to know what do you like to do? Because Punta Cana is the region of The Golden Jail Hotels, (next town 38 miles!) and Santo Domingo is the capital and there are no beaches( nearest is Boca Chica 41 miles). I advise you to go to Puerto Plata (new beaches) and also something to see and discover! You can always contact me.

Forget Punta Cana and Santo Domingo.
Punta Cana is carved out of land where nothing was going on before to make an enclave of all inclusive hotels. Nothing going on there other than your hotel.
Santo Domingo is ok for a dirty hot city with an ocea and no beach. Decent restaurants and Zona Colonial where Columbus's home still stands.
Cabarete is a town world reknown for Wind surfing and Kite Surfing. Young crowd in their 20-30's that play hard during the day and party hardy at night on the beach with many clubs.
You don't go there instead you are making a big mistake.
