Should we rent a car in St. Thomas?

I am going to St. Thomas for 7 days in January. I plan on spending plenty of time at the resort, but I also want to go to Magen's Bay and also St. John. The estimated car rental fee is almost $400. Do you think it is wise to rent a car or should we rely on cabs?? I really appreciate the input.

The safari's are the answer to your question..2 bucks anywhere you will want to go..may take some time getting there but you will see the whole island ...best of luck to you..I have lived here for the past 12 years....have fun

Please don't rent a car. All of the cars are left hand drive, but you drive on the other side of the road. The roads are hilly and narrow, and the locals come flying around. There is virtually no shoulders on the roads to speak of. You will be looking for trouble. It is not a big island. Take a taxi to go where you want. The places you mentioned are all major tourists spots. It will be no problem to get a ride there and back. Your resort may even run or can get a shuttle to these places with set departing and pick up times. Be smart here and don't rent the car.

Everybody gave good responses but they forgot the obvious answer....If it is just 2 people in your group, do not rent a car....Taxis are about the same as car rental, and you do not have to worry about all the car issues like parking, maps, etc..........From experience, I know that if you would have 2 kids with you, making a family of 4, then it may be better to have car because taxi rates X4 really adds up quick, and then a car would save on the budget......
Also, if money is no concern, do not rent a car...You will see more on a taxi and can spend more time looking and seeing, without worrying about parking, maps, gas, etc....., that is what vacations are for, right???
So to sum it up.....If money is not an issue use Taxis........If you are on a budget, car rental usually saves money if you have a party of 4 and want to go out mutiple times everyday...

I always rent a car when I stay on St. Thomas. However, you have to be ready to drive on the left side of the road on narrow and hilly streets. If you are going for a week consider renting a villa from www.mclaughlinanderson.com. It may be slightly more expensive than a resort but when you factor in the savings on food from not eating out all the time you come out ahead. And, you get lots of privacy and room, including your own private pool.

No, I'd say walk, I think the best way to get to know the island is by walking and other transportation media, first because it can be complicated to drive there, second cos' you'll be saving money, third, cos' walking is a great exercise and fourth you;ll enjoy it more, you get to notice things that by car you wouldn't.

Yes!

You really shouldn't rent a car here unless you plan to visit multiple places and transport multiple people. Look at the taxi rate chart linked in my source and you might find that you'd spend a lot less money if you used the taxis.

I should warn you that we're horrendous drivers. Driving here really keeps you on your toes. If you're not from around here driving on the left takes some getting used to. If you do decide to rent a car, make sure you get the insurance.

Unless you are going to going to lots of places every day then I would rent a car because the taxis are a flat rate per person and they can get expensive. But if it you are only going to take a couple of trips then just take a taxi, it will be chaper than that $400 rental car fee, and as it has been stated before, drivers are nuts on the island and the roads are narrow and they drive on the left side. But if you are going to spend an entire day over on St. John then I would maybe rent a car for that one day.

Hi Kate, there will be public transportation available to all the beaches. I would use the island tour busses much cheaper than renting a car
