Puerto Rico is a self-governing, unincorporated territory of the United States. It is not a state, but is under the federal government. Puerto Ricans are also considered Americans and have the rights of American citizens. |

According to US Supreme Court, no; not part of the USA.
We are many things, if you check the actual meaning of the words in an encyclopedia we are:
* a nation,
* a country (but not a free country).
We are also an organized (self governing) and un-incorpored territory of the USA. According to US Supreme Court we (as an un-incorpored territory) are not "part" of the USA, just a posession. Your hand is part of you, your watch belongs to you, but the watch is not part of you.
For all practical means we are a colony of the USA, more or less like the first 13 states were colonies of England before the Independence. Funny, USA a country who was formed when 13 colonies rejected to continue to be colonies is now one of the last countries of the world that have colonies. Pardon me, having "territories". |
