It all depends what you are looking for.

If you are after seclusion and a small island then one of the British Virgin Islands would be a good choice.

If you are looking for something culturally different to the US mainland then Jamaica, Barbados might be worth a look.

Note for these two options above, if you are a US citizen a passport is required now.

another option which requires NO passport if you are a US citizen is Puerto Rico - easy to get to, colorful, vibrant, great beaches, great scenery, rainforest, mountains etc..

Compare your options at www.frommers.com and www.roughguide.com and also check out some syuff about Puerto Rico here www.visit-the-coqui.com/home

Good luck with your search

The chain of islands spanning from Anguilla to Grenada, I personally like St. Martin. These are smaller islands so the prices are not extreme but the beaches and scenary are beautiful.

Explore Oranjestad, Aruba or Montego Bay, Jamaica. These places offer good accomodation and excellent service.

St Maarten/St Martin. Great beaches, excellent food, nightlife, casinos and shopping. You can island hop to Anguilla or St Barths. You have 2 islands for the price of one. St Martin is the french side and St Maarten is the dutch side.

have a great trip where ever you end up

I'm a little partial to the Dominican Republic. Although not thought until recently to be a good tourist spot, the Dominican government is working hard to change that view. The beaches, food, people and especially the night life in the capital of Santo Domingo makes it a great vacation spot. Stick to the resorts. They are beautiful and less expensive than your average Caribbean getaway. The people are welcoming and love visitors. Many of the major airline and vacation brokers carry specials on Dominican Republic stays. Key words for a search may be Punta Cana, Puerta Plata or La Romana (all have fabulous beaches).

I guess the question you want to ask yourself is, "What do I want to do on vacation?" If you are into diving you may want to check out Bonaire or Belize. If you want casino action then Aruba may be the spot for you. Beaches and great food, head over to St. Martin. I have been to several different islands and each one is very different. You also have choices of types of resorts, all-inclusive mega resorts or small b&b type places. I enjoyed the Mayan Riviera in mexico, lots to do, great beach, good nightlife and awesome hotel. I find Aruba too Americanized, I go on vacation to get away from that, who wants McDonald's and Dunkin Donuts on vacation. St. Marting is great for beaces and water activities. Do your research and decide what you want to do on your vacation.
