It depends on how large your family is for how much you should save up. I'd look into using PODS (portable on-demand storage) to pack up/transport your things. Look on their website for rates, etc.
I'd move and then look for jobs. It will be more uncertain, but with how things are right now, I doubt anyone will want to pay your out-of-the-country relocation costs, especially if you're thinking of social work and the police department. Even many corporate jobs I interviewed with wouldn't move me from Ohio to KY (about $500 with a Uhaul)
The LMPD (Louisville Metro Police Department) would love to have you if you're bilingual, and social workers with bilingual capabilities are also in demand in Louisville. I'd look up the lmpd website and see what they've got open right now.
Good Luck! |

I moved from Puerto Rico to Katy, Texas about a year ago and what I did was rent a short term rental like a vacation rental and was able to find a job very quickly once I was here. While I was in PR it was hard for employers to take me serious even though I had a date I would be in the states and an address. But I still think that you should try to find something before you move and if not be prepared with enough money to buy a car, rent and live for at least 3 months. You would also have to research the specific area that you would like to live how jobs are right know, how much is rent , if you have kids; where is the best school district...etc. |

I moved to Tennessee (south of Ky) almost 5 years ago, if you're white as paper and have no accent there's no problem at all. But, if you're dark skinned and have an accent this rednecks treat you like $hit. Here you aren't Puertorican, just another Mexican to them. So be prepared to put people in their place and set the record strait.
About jobs, good luck, is hard even for educated people to land a good job. |

Sheesh. I moved from Puerto Rico to Louisville (where I currently live) in 2007. What are the chances? I'm military though, so the job aspect wasn't an issue. To answer your questions, yes, I would apply for the jobs first, I wouldn't move anywhere in this economy without a firm job lined up first if you already have one now. Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) is the dominant police force in the area, as the city and county police merged a few years back. Social work is a job which is typically gov't social services, which is a really tough field right now. There have been stories all over the local papers about the city furloughing workers, having to lay people off, etc. Again, the economy ain't pretty anywhere. Cashwise, I wouldn't even consider moving without at least $10K in pocket, and that assumes you're not looking to buy a house and you already have jobs lined up. Good luck! |

FIRST THING... for those two type of jobs.. you MUST BOTH BE FLUENT IN SPANISH and not just talk the 20 words of Spanish that most AmeriKans know so they can delude theirself into believing they are fluent in the language... but actually be FLUENT... that means SPEAK, READ AND WRITE the language.. if all you can talk is AmeriKan or Kentuckian.. then YOU WON'T GET HIRED.. it's just that simple.
On top of that... the Unemployment rate is about 16 percent in P.R. the last I heard... and virtually EVERYONE on the island lives on some kind of government assistance.
Rents are HIGH.. think FLORIDA TYPE HIGH and everything not produced on the island or in the Caribbean is ALSO high.. because it has to be SHIPPED IN.
Why would you think that you can move to a country where you don't know the culture, you can't speak the language... you have NEVER BEEN THERE... make you think you can move to PR or ANY caribbean island and get a good paying job so you can buy a house on the beach and live the good life.... that's not just DELUSIONAL.. it borders on the Psychotic
I live on Antigua about 7 months every year and every year I see people like you.. Amerikans, Brits, and Europeans, who come to the caribbean with no idea about what living in the caribbean means... they spend what money they bring with them.. then go home
Generally, people who are failures and losers in their HOME country are even bigger failures or losers in the Caribbean |
