Thoughts on recession effecting ones vacation? |
I run a small private charter operation in the Caribbean (Grand Cayman) and I'm a little concerned about the upcoming season. I'm wondering if you believe people will eliminate chartering a boat as part of their vacation, looking at it as an unnecessary luxury?, or you feel most people will say "I'm on vacation, I work hard, and I'm going to enjoy it"?
Thanks for any input Additional Details EDIT: To the person who called me selfish, how is running a business being selfish? I'm in a tourism based industry, so if you don't have anything of value to add, don't bother. |

That's a tough one. I think that most of the people worried about their budgets will go someplace more local, so there will be fewer people on the island. I do think that the people who make it out to Grand Cayman will still throw a little money around on vacation and would charter a boat, though some may have to trim that back.
How much did the market crash about this time last year affect you compared to the year before? I know that the recession just hit and that many people didn't start to feel it a year ago, but I think that will give you a good indication. If there was a dropoff, I'd expect it to be bigger this year. If there wasn't fewer charters last winter, I think that you'll only see a small effect this year. |

Those who are used to their yearly vacations aren't going to stop taking them. In fact, they may find it even more necessary to run away for a while. They will find a way to finance them.
Stress is a powerful motivator for running away from home.
Take Care. |

This recession is hitting the middle class and the classes below that more than it's hurting the upper classes. So assuming those (the latter) are usually the type of clients you get, I don't think you'll lose that much business. |

I think people are just now realizing how far in the sh*tter the economy is going and aren't planning on a vacation at all. |

I know a lot of people are scared about the current world economic crisis. So for that reason a lot will probably not spend as much on their vacations this year. On the other hand, many people might want to escape all of the negativity and therefore go ahead and spend their money. My advise to you is to cut any costs now if possible. Try to make some bookings by working the internet and colaboration with local hotels, restaurants and airport taxi drivers. I worrk in tourism too here in Mexico and that is the plan here at Puerta Vallata and other resort areas. Europe is still very expensive for Americans so maybe many will choose to vacation closer to home. If you have a web page please send me your direction. Best of Luck |
