Thumbs down for cuba viva la embargo?

every post on cuba if the answer is positive i.e the people are happy, the beaches are nice, good holiday spot there the answer gets numerous thumbs down. If the answer is negative i.e every tourist is robbed at gunpoint then you get many thumbs up.
Whatis the reason? are americans not wanting to admit that some FACETS of cuban life is okay and maybe some parts of american life is not okay? (i.e a 40 year grudge at the cost of the powerless cuban people (as opposed to the leaders))

Well, I can tell you that, at least in my case, I don't like foreigners going to my country at this moment for two reasons:
1 - Visiting there is an endorsement of the Cuban dictatorship
2 - Your money helps the evil brothers to stay in power oppressing our people.
To understand, you must be Cuban . Foreigners have a totally mistaken idea of the situation in our country.

Excuse me. Stephen. I think I didn't use the right words.

I don't mean you scrubbing the idea. I meant some comunists that constantly post comunist propaganda here, trying to make everybody believe that fidel is a hero and that Cuba, under fidel is a paradise

I would like to present some facts that have been happening for a while with other members to explain myself, but if you get upset ( as it seems by your words ) we will not get anywhere

I would appreciate if you read the sentences below and give me a reasonable answer

I repeat.
I don't mean that this is because of you. That is not my idea. As I said above, some people want to present Cuba as a paradise under comunism

Facts:
1 - If comunism is so great, why the countries in eastern Europe threw it to the garbage as soon as they could ?
Why many of us risk their lives trying to escape in primitive rafts ?
2 - Some people here, that claim to be not cubans, insist in presenting their points of view against those of the cubans and expect that everybody takes them as proven facts
3 - Let's suppose that we are the batista family as somebody said here. Asuming that we have survived 50 years and we wish to say something, are not authorized to do it, just because cuba is our country ?

I cannot understand why these people, allegedly not cubans, insist so much in pushing their opinions against those of the cubans. Which is the reason, the motive ?

If, as they say, they are not cubans, this is not their fight, not their problem. Why are they so passionate ?

el loco
Dear Stephen, I think you are exagerating a little bit. It is not true that in cuba everytourist is robbed.

As somebody said here, some people find your version of cuban facts not adjusting to reality

I also hope the embargo will be lifted soon, but only after raul and fidel have made democratic changes, allow civil right, freedom of speech, and free elections

If I am asking for too much, please let me know

Victor
Excuse me, but Cuba is our country, and we have reasons to think what we think.

Excuse me. I apologize. I know you didn't. I wrote the sentences in an inappropriate sequence and I gave the wrong idea. Sorry

The following sentences do not apply to you, but to other people. They seem to have the assignment of posting comunist propaganda here to give a totally false idea of the Cuban situation

Don Camilo
Well, your question shows lack of understanding and lack of knowledge of the cuban situation. If you knew, you would not need to ask. I might try to explain, but I don't think you would understand.
To understand, you must be cuban

Allow me a little suggestion:
Dedicate you time to something that you really know, like your own country. If you wish to write about something that you don't know, I recommend you to write about the inhabitants of the moon or mars.

I assure you, none of them will say anything here

Wait, Stephen, I saw something here.
In additional details you are telling me:
" I never said the people of Cuba were happy"

But immediately after the question "thumbs down for Cuba, etc ? I can see very clearly:
"Every post on cuba if the answer is positive i.e. the people are happy"
Please, allow me to mention something.
In the question:
"When you went to Cuba , was it cheap?"
You said in your answer: "the people seem happy"
In the other question:
"What events in the last 30 years led to the transformation, etc, etc ?
You said: "For a country under embargo and some stupid leadership decisions, the people seem happy"

You know, the reason is very obvious. What it is surprising is that you don't understand what is happening, but maybe I can help you.

We are not happy. Do you think if we were happy we would risk our lives on rafts trying to escape ? Why do you think that more than a million Cubans have escaped from our country ?
Out of happiness ?

When you say that some people feel upset. Would you like a foreigner going to your country to say wrong ( or in the best case mistaken ) statements about it ?

I would really appreciate your answer here.

There are some people here that dedicate their time to post comunist propaganda about our country. We don't like that.

Some even brag about pierre trudeau being a close friend of fidel. Nice.
How do you think a Jewish community would feel if somebody here would post praises about Adolf Hitler ?
Very happy, right ?

At the beginning, I tried to explain our situation, but despite all my efforts, I could not. Nobody wants to change their point of view about anything, no matter what you say

During the mariel exodus, many people were beaten, kicked, put in the tank, etc
We have very good reasons to feel what we feel, and besides, this is our country. We are the ones who have to deal with this situation

I hope not to have been offensive and have been clear

Elizabeth
To all of you that got the thumbs down (bien merecido) I wish you were born in Cuba, all of you, then you would have the same ideas that we Cubans have. Not because we live in the US or because we are US citizens means we forget that our blood is cuban. I am very proud of being cuban because I love my country (not the government). And you should think before you talk, just because you eat a steak in Cuba doesn't mean the cuban people are eating one. I live in the US yes, but i have my whole family in Cuba, the people I love and love me, and you know how hard it is every single day to see that the HPs of Fidel and Raul are still alive when I don't know if I would ever see my grandma and grandpa again? It has been 6 years,6 years since i have seen them, do you think I want that? do you think I am ok with that? No. So don't talk about that, you were not born in Cuba, you were not born in Mumbai. It is sad, yes it is, but don't say that Cuba is a paradise, don't say that when you don't know how it feels to see your mother running like crazy to find something to get the fever down, or to eat, or to help with your asthma attack.
And to the question, I just hope you are not like the ones that got the thumbs down, because then this goes for you too.

What more can I say? Riki, muncle, and mstss said it all. What I will add to Riki's comment is that those ones who have the nastiest of nastiest comments to make have not even been to Cuba in the last 40 years.
Has anyone seen the movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'? Cuba is a PARADISE compared to that REALITY! And that is what it's like in many different countries. Even the DR is ranked poorer than Cuba.

I'm the one, alongside with Riki, who usually gets the most thumbs down of at least 10 LOL....Okay, go ahead and give me the thumbs down. I know you want to....whatever.

muncle
I have noticed the same trend and you are absolutely right. Some even claim they are former Cubans yet they have nothing positive to say, which leads me to believe that they are either lying about being from Cuba, or simply belong to the odd group of people who whatever it takes, will never be happy.

I live in Canada and know a couple of people who left Canada because they thought everything here sucked (sorry for choice of word). Fact of a matter is, Canada kicks buttocks, however no matter what you do, you won’t please everyone. It’s unfortunate that those few spoil the picture for everyone else by spreading false information.

I understand that Americans are angry at people going to Cuba and absolutely loving it. Cuba has the best beaches in the world, hands down THE best tobacco, finest people, gorgeous scenery – in other words Cuba is as close to paradise as it gets. No other country can match that and they – Americans, can’t get a taste of it. And I have purposefully left out the point that makes Cuba absolutely the best place to visit – there are virtually no Americans there. What a blessed place to visit. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

PS - I have visited Cuba countless times and know it backwards. As such I have many positive things to say which often results in thumbs down, as you have pointed out. I have no doubt this post will be rated the same and I'm fine with that. I know I'm telling the truth and it's been acknowledged many a time by having my answers selected as Best Answer despite purposeful down-rating. Feel free to give me thumbs down again, just because you can't enjoy this beautiful place.

Most likely the "thumbs down" comes from dissidents living in the U.S, who don't like the idea of tourists going to Cuba. They seem to have the idea that by insulting others and posting facetious replies they will gain support for their cause. It is really only one more reason why so few people have any respect for what was supposed to be a noble cause. For almost 50 years these people have been trying with absolutely no success to get rid of Castro, obviously they should stick to their dominoes and certainly not give up their day jobs. if they think they will ever return Cuba to the pre-Castro days of Batista and the criminal element that ruled Cuba and kept it as a "banana republic" and the bordello of the Caribbean they should give their heads a shake. Now watch the "thumbs down" come out. Probably also a comment it will be a Cuban solution. On that I agree but it won't be forthcoming from those who fled and now live in the U. S. It will be from Cubans who live in Cuba. Edit: Many Americans do want to visit Cuba. Most of my relatives are American and they are fed up with being told they can't go because their government has kowtowed to a minority group in Florida. They are hoping that with the big change in the White House they wil soon be able to visit without having to go through Canada or Mexico. ABC TV had a story on not long ago , they estimated some 45,000 Americans are already visiting Cuba every year.

I hope embargo is lifted soon.

Rikki nailed this one. It's a shame really that people can't come on here for TRAVEL information. After all this is the travel section, and not the politics section. If you listen to the wording on " the others" you can tell they are one and the same.
