Traveling to Negril - what about dean?

My husband and I are scheduled to leave for Negril Aug 27 - 31 for my 30th bday. What is the normal policy for traveling during and after hurricanes? i know it is hard to say what kind of damage will be done until it gets closer...but won't it really mess up the beach and water????

Just watch and wait. Only time can tell since dean is supposedly strengthening we are still unsure as to whether or not it will be a direct hit. In the past with hurricane ivan negril was hit pretty badly and many popular places were closed such as rick's cafe. so it is hard to tell now.

What i would be more concerned of is elections on the 27th of august. Things may be tense for a couple of days.

The decision is yours. Personnally though i would postpone for about a week until some normalcy has been regained.

You can do other things like go on tours etc..... the beaches should be cleaned up by then, though. Bear in mind that the 27th is the General Elections in Jamaica.

Depends on how bad Negril gets hit,,,sometimes it takes months to clean up and also they may not have power so soon after the hit. It is a Cat. 4 or 5 hurricane and that is bad,,,so I would change my dates. Also the election can cause some problems. Change the dates.......

We are hoping to visit Negril in January - reservations are made and deposits have been paid to Beaches Negril. We are a group of about 15, going for my daughter's wedding. My travel agent told me this morning that the reports she is getting is that Negril was spared the brunt of the storm. Minor structural damage but lots of clean-up.

Would someone give more info on the general elections please? i'm going to jamaica the same time. my best friends are on their honeymoon in negril and they can't get a flight out!!! they wouldn't even allow her friend, who has a plane to come and get them (the plane was too small) I 'm so worried for them!!

sweet_sue_58
Personally I would delay the trip more because of potential unrest related to the general elections. Tempers can run high and several native Jamaicans I know have expressed concerns for safety. As far as delays related to the hurricane, contact your travel agent or airline carrier for rules and restrictions. You might be able to change plans without penalty.
Good luck.

You should pass. Jamaica is truly 3rd world. I was there in June 07. I can't imagine going through with your plans.
