Travelling to Puerto Rico - Is Passport needed for non-US citizens? |
I am NOT an American citizen. I am in the USA on a work (H-1) visa. I am a foreign national from a different country. Do I still need a Passport to go to Puerto Rico? I believe even with the new Passport rules change, local American citizens do not need a passport to Puerto Rico and can use a regular Drivers License to go and come back to PR - similar to travel from Boston to L.A.
I go around USA mainland myself using just my state issued Drivers license like everyone else. Please advice. I just want to go there on a 3-5 day extended weekend vacation.
Thanks! |

A Passport is not required, but on the way back to the USA Mainland they will inquire about your citizenship, and it would be best if you carry your greencard/work-authorization card, just in case...
When I went last year, they asked us about our citizenship, and asked to see my hubby's greencard (thankfully he had his), so make sure you have yours, just in case... |

You obviously have a passport...since you are a foreign national in the U.S. on a visa...however, you do not need to use your passport to travel WITHIN the U.S. Traveling to Puerto Rico is considered domestic travel...you just need your photo I.D. However, as a foreign citizen, in the U.S I would think it very unwise to travel anywhere without your passport and visa with you. I am an American citizen living in a foreign country and would never dream of traveling without my passport and visa with me. If you were in an accident, or a victim of crime, or got sick , you would need to show that you are in the U.S. legally. In other words, you can travel to Puerto rico and leave your passport at home, but why would you? Edit: Seems the other 2 people who answered do not understand that you are NOT an American citizen and therefore cannot get an American passport. Anyway, even American citizens do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico. |

as long as you treat the INS people in the airport nice they will let you go. Unless you look like a terrorist, then they'll get suspicious. |

You don't need passport, because you have a valid drivers license. |

Well I am an american citizen, but my husband is not. We went to Puerto Rico and when we were coming back, one of the security guards saw that my husband's id was temporary (it was not expired) and asked for my husband's passport. I asked why, since they say you do not need passport and he said that we should have it anyways because his id was temporary. Well he let us pass, but what if he wanted to give us trouble? The week after one of his friends went to PR and had no problem at all, so it depends who do you find when you are there. I would take my passport. |
