Trini Americans all yuh is still Trini? |
Why is it that some Trinis who live overseas act like they better than anyone when they come home? I living in the US for over 20 years and don't have an accent. A man might come to the States for two weeks and talking more yankee than a yankee.
What does get me vex is when you go to the top clubs in P.O.S in the summer time and listen to the accent of those who just going to school abroad.
People keep it real. Enjoy who you are and your culture. The funny thing is when you go to Europe they find our accent romantic. Additional Details Excuse me Dry Season not summer. Thanks for correcting me. |

Talk yuh talk breds!
I too have been living in the US for over 20 years also and still have my accent I am a TRINIDADIAN to the core and very proud of that fact.
I continue to be puzzled by the American accents I hear floating through Trinidad. Dem people just FLY over de States and KILLING yuh with accent...steups.
But it is rampant on the radio station too!
Big Carnival fete advertising on the radio with a Yankee accent??? Hello??? What causing dat???
We as a people need to be proud of our unique culture and heritage whether we are at home or representatives of our country abroad. |

I know your question is for Trini's in the US but I am proud to be Trini, so I deserve to answer too. BTW I am proud you are one of the few that keep their Trini accent.
I was born in Canada, to Trini parents and moved back home as a child. Of course when I started school with my candianish accent, I was taunted with 'why you tryin to sound american?' From that day I vowed to be Trini. I live in the UK now and even though my Canadian accent can be heard from time to time. People here love my Trini accent, and so do I.
The bess laugh I ever had was one day I was in a club here in the UK and this girl I went seconday school with, came up to me talking the most hardcore yankee accent and tellin me how she just moved to London...blah blah blah and askin me what I been doin since school..........first time she ever leave Trinidad and she sporting a yankee accent. LoL.... never liked her very much so I said really loud, I know you tryin to sound foreign but u using the wrong accent. I still get a good laugh every now and then :D
In the words of Nadia Batson:
THIS IS MY LAND
AND I WOULD NEVER LET HER GO
THIS IS MY LAND
THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE I KNOW
WHERE EVERYBODY HAVE FUN
IN THE SUN
AND WE NEVER STOP UNTIL THE DAY IS DONE
TRINIDAD……….WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH |

This discussion made me think of a wonderful Brooklyn-by-way-of-Trinidad poet, Roger Bonair-Agard. I saw his memorable performance in Wisconsin in January.
He's absorbed the literature of the whole English-speaking world (or so it seems) and recites his unique poems with a powerfully emotive Trinidadian accent. He often writes about his memories of coming of age in Trinidad and combines street talk, intellectual discourse, romance, and deep feeling effortlessly. |

You've asked the question that I ask myself all the time! I love the fact that even though I've been in the US for so many years my accent is still thick, lovely and TOTALLY TRINI!
I'm a Trini, my mannerizms are still Trini, and I love my homeland even with its banana republic mentality. Wouldn't want to be anything else. |
