Underwater pictures?

I am about to move to the Cayman Islands, and was wondering if anyone out there has experience with taking photos underwater. I have a nice digital camera and a cheap film camera, and have been looking at various waterproof cases. I would love to hear any tips, ideas, etc. that you may have.

Thanks,
Nita

i know they make waterproof diposable cameras so you can use one of those! :) i dont think they make waterproof digital camera's.

I think there are basically two options:
1 Cheaper: Buy a standard waterproof disposabel camera. I got pretty good results for shallow (30ft) waters. I have taken very good and clear pictures using these cameras.
2. More expensive: Depending on the digital camera you have, you can get a waterproof case which allows you to take pictures on deeper waters.

just buy a waterproof disposable camera..

Honestly, unless you have a great underwater camera-one particulary for that....it is not worth buying a housing case for your camera. Buy a disposable one for $10 at Walmart and enjoy the time you had. No one really even cares to look at the underwater pics...I was so concerned about getting a decent looking picture when I went, that when my camera filled up....i had a good time because I finally enjoyed myself.

Waterproof cases are your best bet.

I have one for my Olympus Stylus 710 and it's fantastic!
Just be sure to check the underwater limitations, and don't go past that. For example, it's it's only for 10 feet underwater, don't go 11! Water will seep in.

If you'd be willing to buy a new camera, the Olympus Stylus 720 SW is fantastic. It's shockproof up to 5ft, and waterproof up to 10ft. It's about $350, but worth every penny!

By the way, i'm insanely jealous that you're moving to the Cayman Islands! How fun!

All those ppl talking about disposable waterproof cameras have no idea what an underwater camera is. Those cheapies cannot go below 15-30' in depth. Scuba cameras are typically rated for 200' -300' depth.

There are lot of underwater cases... I have had 2 of them .. on for a Sony DSC-P9 and one for a Nikon Coolpix.

This is the problem:
1. The cases work well but are expensive.
2. Adding an external flash is possible, but setting it for a "pre-flash' mode is hard.
3. The buttons are sometime cumbersome to work with.

So finally I bought Sealife DC500 set. It works great. For about $650 I had the whole kit which includes external flash, etc. I got many nice pix with that. Only issue I have had is that the land pictures taken with flash are not so great, since it is optimized for underwater use.

Do a comparison shopping on the cost of case plus external strobe & link for your camera versus something like teh DC500. Another company -- Sea & Sea also makes something similar.

I would recommend purchasing an underwater camera. Underwater cases can only go a few feet down before eventually springing a leak. Underwater cameras are pricey! But they can handle water pressure better. If you still intend to buy an underwater case, cover the whole camera and case with a waterproof, leak-proof, tear-proof bag if you plan on diving more than the recommended feet down. And check to see if your camera can handle water pressure. Things have been known to break and crush from within because of water pressure.
