Vacationing tropical lands?

My mother (who is a young looking 44 year old) is planning to go on vacation with her husband. She asked me to research for her where she should go. Only problem is that I HAVE NO IDEA. She only has about 5000. She says her husband doesn't like cruises, so I can't tell her to visit all the caribbean Islands. And Hawaii seems expensive. Cancun? Bahamas? Barbados? DR? PR? Jamaica? Belize? Bali? Virgin Islands? Brazil? Is Bali unsafe because of terrorists? HELP!

They have some lovely all-inclusive resorts in Cancun or Riviera Maya area.
Some are adult only. Check this website for ideas and prices.

In Cancun all the RIU RESORTS and PALACE RESORTS are very nice. They are all-inclusive resorts and have decent food. The white sand beaches and aqua colored water are beautiful.

There is alot to do in the Cancun area. They can visit the Mayan Ruins, take a ferry over to Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) rent a golf cart, tour the island ,stop for a swim on Norte beach. Head to Xel-Ha the world largest aquarium. Swim the dolphins.

$5,000 is a nice budget. They should not have any problems finding a nice place to vacation in the Caribbean or Mexico.

If you have any specific questions, just ask away.

Good luck in your research. check out tripadvisor.com for more island ideas.)

Bahamas - Close, Atlantis is great to stay in.

Grand Cayman - No one begging for money. Beautiful beaches, great snorkeling and food.

Jamaica - Montego Bay in particular. Stay in one of the hotels ON the beach, Doctor's Cove. Get the all inclusive package. It's worth it. Avoid leaving the touristy area at night unless you have a local escort or are black.

Puerto Rico - You can explore much of the island w/o danger. The beaches leave something to be desired.

Virgin Islands - Stay on St. Croix. Visit St. Thomas and especially St. John. Maybe stay one night on St. John at one of the eco-friendly places.

Belize - It really is a utopia. Snorkeling, SCUBA, Mayan ruins, great food, wonderfully friendly people, they speak English well enough to be understood.

Dominican Republic - All inclusive is cheap. Stay on the south side of the island, better beaches. But accomodations are more geared to European travelers who are ok with more spartan accomodations.

Tahiti - I've never been but started looking into it. You could get there and back (and eat too) for under $5,000. At least you could in 2003.

Paris - Airfare to Europe is cheap now and a nice destination if she can stand the trip getting there.

Poconos - Mt. Airy Lodge.

Gatlinburg - Cabins in (or near) the Smokies. Very pretty and you're never far from great pancakes.

Las Vegas - Sin city is a must see for everyone. Once. Food extra cheap. You spend $600 to get there and stay in a hotel. Then you spend $4,400 on the slots and overpriced shopping. Or if she's a bargain hunter, spend time at the pawn shops buying up stuff gamblers pawned to get more cash!

Lake Tahoe - B E A U T I F U L ! ! !. Another must see. Twice!

Try St. Maarten! Known for awesome shopping, restaurants and there are 37 different beaches. Half the island is french and the other half dutch. If they like casinos thisis one of the few caribbean islands that has casinos (outside of an all inclusive). Also, its known as the friendly island and great for exploring! Better than being stuck in an all inclusive cuz its too unsafe to explore. There are c/o beaches for those that are into that as well. Look into it!!!
