Its not mandatory to get vaccinations before you go. Drink only bottled water and be careful about street food.

Obamas Shoes
You don't need shots for a vacation, but if you can get shots for Hep A and B cheap, you may as well get them. There is no vaccine for Dengue Fever. There are very few bugs in the DR because there are millions and millions of little lizards that eat them both day and night. Almost every tree in the country has half a dozen on them. You can get Malaria in the very rural areas, but this does not happen in tourist zones.

No one drinks the tap water in the DR. Go to any local market and you will see five gallon jugs of water for people to drink in their homes. The ice is safe since it all comes from purified water. If you drink tap water you can get very sick so don't even brush your teeth with it.

The food in the DR is safe in general, but be careful of buffets in All Inclusives.

i always go to dominican republic every year before i leave i always go to the doctor to get my vaccines the past time he recomeded me to get the vaccines for meat incase the meat from over there has somethign wrong, flue shots, mosquitos etc

Its suggested because there is this disease going around called Dengue and you don't want to catch, it could be pretty deadly. Don't want to scare you, have fun and bye

Highly Favoured
I do not believe that you need any shots. I generally do not drink any water wherever i go. I usually drink bottled water so I bring my own. Just be careful what you eat and drink and if you get any meats smell it first to make sure it is not tainted. This is what I do anywhere I go.

taiketsu/ showdown master
No but bring A LOT of bug repellent. And unlike other commentors here I say you don't REALLY need your own bottled water just be careful where you get it from and besides, they sell their own water, purifired, though not as good here. You should be fine.
