Vegetable popular in Puerto Rico.?

I was in San Juan Puerto Rico a few years ago and had an appetizer that kinda looked like a potato and I believe it was a root of some kind. It was REALLY good and I am trying to find out what it is...can anyone help me?!?!?! It was served pretty plain as I remember.
Possibly it was Chayote Root...

There are actually a few different vegetables that are a form of root eaten in Puerto Rico. Yuca being one of the most popular & can be what you ate. This is also known as Cassava. Please see below. I will include images & maybe you can figure out which it was.

But there is also Yautia or Malanga, which is Taro root, see below:

Chayote Root(Ichintal):

ñame or Yame, which is a yam:

Batata is a puerto rican sweet potato that has white flesh & when cooked is a pinkish or purplish color(unlike the sweet potatoes we normally see that are orangish) :

Apio root, which is celery root:

it might been white sweet potato or yucca.

Sun
It was probably yucca (pronounced joo-kah)...it is a root vegetable also known as cassava, and you might find it in the frozen food section. If not, try a Latin grocery.

Must be Yucca,,,white and ussually served with garlic and Onions...

NYC Chutzpah
Yucca

Most grocery stores have it. It is Yucca. They cut it up and fry it like a french fry. It looks kinda wierd when you see it. the skin is very thick and brown but once you peel it you will find what looks like a potato. Cut it like you would for french fries and fry it in vegetable oil. Take it out drain and add salt. Here is a picture of what to look for.

There are various roots that are great tasting. I know because I love to eat them with a mix called Serenata which is cod fish fillet in pieces mixed with lettuce, sliced tomato, sliced onion and served with good olive oil. The roots are:
1.name-(~)over the n and sounds like canyon- the name is soft, white and sweet.
2.yuca-arraroot- it is so delicious but cooks a bit longer
3malanga- it is like oval, when peeled it is like a pink color with purple, but it is so good
4batata-our sweet potato which is like a tan color skin and a light yellow inside. It is realy sweet like the yam
5. chayote-this is semi sweet and is soft and delicious
6. yautia-it is a bit smaller than the potato, has dark skin easy to peel and is delicious too.
There are other vegetables that grow above the ground:
1. plantain- like a green banana, but longer and to peel I hold it under a bit of running water, with the knife I make a slilt from top to bottom and peel. The running water lossens up the peel
2.guineo-either green or yellow, but the green is cooked the same as the plantain, after peeling, boil in water. The plantain cut in 3-4 pieces and boil
3.pana-it is breadfruit, like a large green ball, shave off the outer skin, skin out the center with seeds, but in pieces and boil until soft.
I hope this helps and enjoy your verduras which is the typical name for all these typical vegies.
