Get a car rental, and pick up a map of the island. If you decide to drive, make sure you keep a VERY tight grip on the car and don't stay stopped at any red lights at night time, because you might get robbed. Don't go out at night too late. Freaks really do come out at night. Visit OLD SAN JUAN for a whole day. Great historic sites, and nice little bars. Visit Fajardo and it's boat to "Culebra". It's a 2 1/2 hour ride to a perfect little island off the coast of Puerto Rico. Make 1 trip to 1 place per day, and you should be set!!!! Pack light, and inexpensive.

Must get to Dorado. Hacienda del Mar, Hyatt properties. They have a hotel or the rentable timeshare option (no hassles, I swear- I did it). Lazy river, close to local food (good stuff), not like San Juan which is yucky, in my opinion. Dorado is tropical and away from all the stuff you see everyday. have fun.

My suggestions are: 1] To get to know the "real" Puerto Rico, spend some time out of San Juan. 2] Try speaking some Spanish, even if it's a poorly pronounced "Gracias". 3] For real PR food, avoid any restaurant with the menu in English. 4] Don't ask silly questions like "Are those Puerto Rican dollars?" or "Do they have cell phones here?" 5] Don't compare us with the USA. 6] Smile a lot, especially at babies. 7] If you rent a car, when (not if) you get lost, just stop and ask, preferibly another driver, not a pedestrian 8] ¡Que la pases requete bien!

Go to the beaches, they are awesome, bring a lot of sun block. Also, like Jaci said, the shopping malls are great. You can go visit the restaurants, specially the sea food restaurants. And of course, the differents "faros" (lighthouses) in the island.

I recommend to go to San Juan, Condado, Isla Verde, And Rincon beaches, and restaurants. San Juan has many museams, and lot of places you must need to go. I am from Ponce, locating in the South part of the island. You can see there few museam, go to la Guancha, see the Centennial Fire House Department, and can visit Hacienda Buena Vista. Any doubts, email me.

I LOVE Puerto Rico, I bought a map, but only so that I could find the longest possible way to get where I was going, I almost wanted to get lost, that was how I found some of the most beaustiful views (especially on the interior of the island). At very least, try to take a different route every time. For the BEST PR food, go to El Sevilla, it's between Gurabo and Juncos, My Tio Raul (my great uncle Raul) owns it. Every town town in PR has a town square, no matter how small the town, and they are all beautiful, usually an open plaza with a fountain in the middle, and an old Cathedral at on end. The People are EXTREMELY friendly. Women are greeted with a kiss on the cheek, men shake hands. Driving is a lot of fun! People drive CRAZY there, but I liked it ;) There are more roads per sq mile in PR than anywhere else on Earth, so explore! Oh, and a couple more, check out the biolminescent bay at La Parguera, Go on the weekends, and the streets are packed with shrimp carts and arts and crafts and it's a lot of fun, then go on the glass bottom boat in the evening, then when you get back, it's likea giant street party, it's one of my most vivid memories from a trip there when i was young (like 10). Also , go to Rincon! I love that town and the beaches. The restaurant "Calypso" is the quintessential carribean bar. It's just open air, right on the beach, live music, and a cold rum punch or better yeat, Una Medalla! I'l be back there this spring, looking for some property to buy, I love it that much!

Go to Vieques. Small island away from the main. It's beautiful and untouched. Water is so clear. 45min away on a fairy boat. Four trips a day if you miss the boat you don't get off that island. But who cares. Also go to the Bacardi Factory, enjoy free drinks on the patio. Also go to Gilligan's Island. It's at the other end of the island. Mainly adults. Plan to spend all day there. Rent a car it's a place to go. My mom is from Sabana Seca. I would move there but there is no Level I Trauma Hospital there.
