never been to PR. Have been to the DR, if you're looking for a lot of interaction with the locals, places to go out to eat, I would not recommend the DR. It's very remote in the resort areas. Beautiful country but you pretty much stay @ the resort because most are far off from the main area, and there really is no 'city' it's just small area's with stores etc.

WE HAVE BEEN VACATIONING IN PUERTO RICO CONSECUTIVELY FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS, AND IT GETS MY VOTE FOR SEVERAL REASONS...
ALTHOUGH IT IS A RELATIVELY SMALL ISLAND THERE IS A VAST ASSORTMENT OF THINGS TO DO AND SEE VARYING FROM PLACE TO PLACES SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST SAN JUAN !!
THE WEST SIDE TO HOME TO MANY BEAUTIFUL SURFING,SNORKELING, SWIMMING, AND DIVING BEACHES. THERE IS PLENTY OF AWESOME REAL DIVING TO BE HAD AS WELL. THE TOWN OF ISABELA HAS GORGEOUS SAND DUNES AND A HORSEBACK RIDING TOUR YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE CALLED TROPICAL TRAIL RIDES. THERE ARE ALSO THE THE RIO CUMUY CAVES TO EXPLORE. THE TOWN OF MAYAGUEZ HAS AN AMAZING ZOO. THERE IS A BIO-BAY (ONE OF 3 IN PR)IN LA PARGUERA AND TO FORGET A TRIP TO GILLIGAN'S ISLAND.
THE EAST SIDE OF PUERTO RICO IN THE FAJARDO AREA THERE IS THE EL YUNQUE RAIN FOREST WHICH IS NOT TO BE MISSED THE HIKES ON THE MT BRITTON TRAIL AND ON THE TRAIL TO LA MINA FALLS IS OUTSTANDING. YOU WILL ALSO HAVE ACCESS TO THE FERRY WHICH WILL TAKE YOU TO THE SISTER ISLANDS OF CULEBRA AND VIEQUES. DO YOU SEE WHERE I AM GOING WITH THIS ?? HERE ARE SOME WEBSITES FOR YOU TO EXPLORE...ENJOY! Some more info/links below to help or hinder your decision. Good luck

I suggest Puerto Rico for many reasons.
1. Safety , USA
2. Infrastructure is better.
3. Everyone Speaks English and Spanish
4. All the amenities of luxury and Beauty together.
5. Beautiful beaches , rain forest, bird santuaries, florescent bay , caves and much more that are not remote from any nice hotel. Lots of historic sites to burn off calories after eating our good typical food.
6. Besides Puerto Rico IS THE STAR OF THE CARRIBEAN
why would you not want to see the best first.
These are just some of the reasons maybe I could tell you much more but I do not want to ruin the element of surprise.

Dominican Republic, by far. Try going to one of the resorts in the east (Bavaro or Punta Cana areas).

If you're looking for isolation... the DR. Plus, it is just a little more exotic that PR since it's not part of the U.S. However, PR has El Yunque... a really cool rain forest, plus I'm partial to PR food. I don't care so much for DR food... although some is the same in both places.

I've bin to the dom. rep. 5 times, and I loved it!! I stayed in Sosua once, but that wasn't as good as Cabarete. We stayed at the Apart & Beach house Caracole. It has it's own beach and it's quiet. Not far from the city and the city is full of life. Try it because it's great!! Have fun

The Dominican Republic is a country located on the eastern two-thirds of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, bordering Haiti. Hispaniola is the second-largest of the Greater Antilles islands, and lies west of Puerto Rico and east of Cuba and Jamaica. Once dependent on the export of sugar, the Dominican Republic is one of the most popular tourist destination in the Caribbean.

The island is largely mountainous and includes the highest point in the West Indies. Although inhabited mostly by people of mixed European and African origins, Western influence is apparent in the colonial buildings of the capital, Santo Domingo, as well as in art and literature. African heritage is reflected most noticeably in the music. The two heritages blend in the popular song and dance, the merengue.

Temperatures are high throughout the year, sea breezes help to counteract the humidity, so it is rarely unbearable. As this is the most mountainous island in the Caribbean, higher areas are much cooler and wetter than lowland areas. The north coast is wetter than the south, which is wetter than most other Caribbean islands during the rainy season from May to October , when hurricanes and tropical storms may occur. Temperatures can dip below freezing point during winter months (December to April) in mountain areas. There are two rainy seasons, the heaviest from May to August and the lightest from November to December. The southwest is the driest region.
