Its Very Hot In Jamaica
Well yes there are, as for everywhere else in the world. Michelle and lazazeen tekk it to dem!! Dave if i see you refer to "huts" one more time, It'll be on!!

Learn about what? every where you go there are some areas in a country that is not well off than other areas, tourist spots have nothing to do with anything. In the inner city they are worst off than people in Cherry gardens, because they are poor. So what exactly do you want to know. Even in the US, certain areas you have poor people, south central and then you have the rich people in hollywood on the hills. Its not much different and don't make it a big deal, everywhere is the same thing.

DaveDuncan that was a BAD answer, i am beginning to wonder how you've become a top contributor for the Jamaica category. I thought u had sense!!!!!
Most Jamaican do not live in dire poverty: and with that i suppose u mean below the poverty line. Well the latest census proved that 19.1% live below poverty line, which if u didn't realize means that MOST are above the poverty line. And they do not live in huts!!!, I am so disgusted by Ur answer.......I don't even care about a violation!!! Your an idiot, and to think that you are top contributor. Disgusting. You dont even know the basic facts about the country

there are different parts the rich parts and the poorer parts

Well if you want to see how people there live you will have to leave the revervations/ all-inclusive hotels. There are indeed alot of people there who people in North America may consider as being poor. That creates a very important question. WHat is wealthy/poor?

jamaica is a developing nation, so it does not have the wherewiatl to rip off other countries. it was much better off financial at one time as there were many manufacturing and production taking place. In the early 80s -90s the financial sector callapsed as there was a trade embargo set up as a result of jamaicas close association with the Cubans/castro.

My parents told me that people had money and could not get basic goods and services as trading was not possible as a result inflation skyrocketed. oversuply of money.

Jamaica is a wonderful country, go beyond the resorts, join a sports club or so and you will meet people. if you stick around the resorts or nearby and people realise that you are Americans they may offer you drugs as they know Americans like drugs/marijuana.

the best way to know the way of life is to meet the local people, it will also be a much cheaper vacation for you as they know street smarts.

go to kingston, it is like any major city in the U.S. it has its ghettos as well as its beverly hills, and many inbetween

You could try reading Jamaican newspapers jamaicaobserver.com to learn more about how things really are in Jamaica. The majority of citizens struggle to survive (rapidly rising prices on essential commodities) but there is a tiny privileged class who have massive gated houses in the hills above Kingston far away from the ordinary folk. Corruption is rife and as elections loom, militant supporters from the opposing parties resort to violence. The homicide rate doubles in an election year compared to a non-election year.

Most Jamaicans live in dire poverty. There are few good jobs and those require very hard work and extremely long hours. Many people live in huts. You can look up The Jamaica Gleaner on line. It is Jamaica's largest newspaper and is based in Kingston.
