Don't even think of it. The DR has a zero tolerance policy on all drugs, even soft ones such as pot. If you are caught with even a small amount you go directly to jail and will sit in a hellhole of a Dominican prison for who knows how many months or years and spend thousands of dollars to get out. An edit. Iamachef must be smoking some himself. It isn'tt hat drugs aren't available but again don't get involved. People turn in users and sellers, tourists or residents. A friend Stuart an American guy who owned the restaurant Otro Mundo near Playa Dorada spent months in jail when he was falsly accused of being involved with pot. TheDR subscribes to the Napoleonic code not only in civil matters but also criminal, you are guilty until you prove your innocence. By the way, prostitution is neith legal nor illegal enforcement is really up to the local police chief and depends who is paying him off. You never want to be involved with the authorities in the DR, it is too costly to get out of jail, bribery is rampant in the country.. |

If you listen to this last guy you are going to be a sorry SOB.
Sure you can buy pot or anything else but the person that sells it to you is going to drop a dime on you and it will cost you a lot of money to get out.
Everyone shares in your money including the police, the person that sold it to you and even your own freaking attorney. Once in a Dominican Jail you will pay anything to get out and be thankful it only cost you 10,000 US dollars. If it gets to court then you have to include the prosecutor and the Judge and the price goes way higher.
This is valuable info. Be stupid if you want but you have the info. |

Just go to Santo Domingo . Go to a Barrio Like Herrera, San Carlos, Capotillo, Gualey, Guachupita. These are all hoods were drugs are everywhere. But be carefull. DO NOT go into these Barrios with Jewelery and expensive clothing, sneakers, and looking like a tourist. You will get robbed. remember where the are Drugs there is crime. |

Zero Tolerance, and Dominican jails are not nice. They WILL lock you up, and if you try to bribe them this will dig you into a deeper hole. It will cost you almost a 6 figure dollar amount to get out of the problem.
Stick to the Brugal, and whateve you do stay away from all-inclusive hotels. |

Zero tolerance my @$$. It is readily available on the beaches and cheap. I wouldn't light up on the beach in public, but then again I wouldn't that here either. Now if you get caught bringing stuff into their country, then yes you will die in a Dominican Prison. But in general, they just don't care about that sort of thing. Prostitution is also illegal, but that hasn't stopped litterally hundreds in not thousands of brothels from opening up all over the island. They operate openly and even put up billboards and buy advertising. Trust me, if they will let all of that to go on, they are not going to go after you for smoking a joint.
Dominican Republic is one of those countries where they really depend on tourism. It's one of the few places where tourists really have free run of the country, because the won't do anything to screw up the tourism industry. They tolerate a lot. The way they look at it, they have tourists spending a lot of money in their country and if they want sex and weed, then the "customer is always right" attitude comes in to play. They will do anything to keep the tourists coming - no pun intended. |
