What's the best Carribean Island to visit?

I'm not looking to spend a fortune, or stay at a resort. I'd like to go some place warm, with great culture, and safe enough to stay among the locals. Less touristy is good.

If you can cope with the locals not speaking English consider Cuba.

As about 1/3 of the total population of the caribbean and 1/3 of the total land area, too, Cuba has enough going on that the tourists don't dominate. (I once spent a week in Manzanillo and only saw two other tourists in that time).

The Cuban people are generally friendly and fun-loving.

Farai
Dominica.(n.b not 2 be mistaken with the Spanish speaking Dominican Republic.)

St. Lucia's a great place. But what exactly to you mean by "stay among the locals"? It's pretty safe to fraternize witht the locals.

E.G. Emeritus
Barbados: warm, culture. safe, but very touristy.
St. Vincent, Grenada, Carriacou

easebelize
Go to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye in Belize.
There you can find Hotels for any Budget. If you go off Season,
(June - October) you will have a lot of Fun with the Locals.

St Maarten is great if you like shopping beaches dining out and casinos can be a lil crowded but you can find some quiet spots on the island

nikii
look I know it is not exactly a caribbean island, however today I saw this promotion in Canada.com and I just recall how nice, friendly, cultural and safe Cancun is; I know is touristy but is nice and this promotion is cheap try the link might work for you:
