What Currency to use in Dominican Republic?

I am going on holiday and have only changed up some pounds for dollars. do I need any local currency?

The official currency is the Dominican Peso, not regular peso. But everyone not only will accept US dollars, they prefer it. That's because over the years the dollar has been alot stronger them the DOM. Just make sure to bring lots of small bills, because no one will want to or be able to break a larger one. have Fun!

Dominican Peso which isn't worth the paper it is printed on.
I was there two months ago. I think the exchange rate is like; US$1.00 - 53pesos.

They use the Dominican Peso (DOP). It would be advisable to have some local currency with you while there. You never know when you may need it.

Peso, the same as in Mexico. I know I went to Punta Cana in May 2006. Have fun it's great. Check out Saona Island tour.

The local currency is Dominican Peso and I'd advise you to bring some with you.

Caped_Crusader
Dom Peso. I have heard that exchanging at the airport is best. Remeber when you use your CC for purchases your CC company will exchange at the most current rate...can be very helpful since some merchants will play games with the rates.

They take US dollars with no problem. They also are VERY aggressive (at least when we went) about you using your credit card. That made me too nervous so I never did use it.

Dollars should work, but the official currency is the Dominican peso. This link should give you a much better idea:

The Dominican Republic uses the Dominican Peso. However, many local merchants, shops and restaurants accept US Dollars as well. The exchange rate for pound to Dominican Peso is £1 -61.99 Dominican Pesos. If you're taking dollars on your holiday it's probably not a bad idea to convert a small amount to Dominican Pesos.

it's a personal choice really, however i have spoken to a lot of Americans recently on a travel forum and they only take dollars to the Dom Rep and haven't had any problems - they even tip and pay taxis with the dollar
