When I was in Montego Bay I amused myself by walking around downtown and counting the number of people who told me "I know you from the hotel!" Ask them which one and they will go away.

If you should disembark on Ocho Rios, tour guides can take you to Dunn's River or a walk the craft village. If the boat will wait for a time visit Discovery Bay, the landing of Christopher Columbus. There are a scores of beaches with lots of fun too.

If it is Negril, quite fine, visit the 5 mile stretch white sand beach. Portland, you can ride on the raft on Rio Grande.

The food, authentic. Roast yam, bammy, salt fish, ackee, mackerel 'run dung', breadfruit, ripe banana delights, coconuts and so much more.

Com wen yu reddy? <-- that's the patois.

Yah Mon!

Hi there, I am a Jamaican. I live in ocho Rios if thats where your ship will dock... I recommend the Island village shopping centre. Their is also the Craft Market. However as a Jamaican I must prepare you that you most likely will be hasseld ( when i say hasseld I am referring to the locals who are selling craft items in the streets or in the market will offer you countless items to buy from them) however simply stand firm and say no thank you. Regaring the weed issue alot of Jamaicans are of the opinion that many people choose to come to Jamaica because of the weed hence the reason why the will offer you to buy. If you dont need the weed simply just say no. Like many and any place that you will go there are unsafe places to go. If you'll be in Ocho Rios you will be just fine. Its a tourist destination and the safety of our visitors is taken very seriously.
Its an absolutely beautiful island with fabulous beaches. I think you'll have a great time. I live here and I personally love being here.

Enjoy your Vacation!

Margaritaville should be fun. try there. where will the cruise ship dock?

You don't want to be wandering around on your own - especially shopping - in Jamaica. That is, unless you can put up with being hassled mercilessly by sometimes hostile locals who don't take "no" for an answer.

Been there three times on cruises and done ship excursions twice. Even with the ship excursions, your safety isn't guaranteed. [Of course, nothing is guaranteed....] Some cruise lines are dropping Jamaica as a stop due to complaints from passengers about safety and "unfriendly natives".

One thing you could do is to go to Island Village, if your stop is Ocho Rios. It is right next to the pier - literally a five-minute walk, although you'll still be hassled by vendors [they'll even offer weed to the teens even if they're with their parents]. But once you get there, you'll be able to relax - no vendors allowed on the small beach there [and there are police to enforce it]. There are a few shops and perhaps some entertainment, in an effort to create the feel of a Jamaican village, but of course it's not authentic. There is also a Margaritaville, which has a very small pool, a small water slide, a nice hot tub, and some beach toys. Last time we were there, if you bought a drink [soft or hard] you got a bracelet that allowed you to use the toys.

If you want to read more about the Jamaica ports - and all your other ports - go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Boards" at the top of the page, then go to "Ports of Call".
