september is usually a high hurricane month, when they strike roads are usually closed and airports close for a few days, but a resort is one of the best places to be becuase they have stong buildings, generators, and plenty of food stored, should a storm hit while you are there the airports and major roads will be one of the first places they start with repairs, so you should be fine. |

In September Jamaica have a high probability of getting hit with a hurricane. I remembered hurricane gilbert in 1988, we went weeks without electricity, water and communication. We had to be living on tin foods, corned beef, sardine and mackerel. |

The chances of a hurricane hitting in september are not very high..the last time we had a major direct hit was in sep 1998 with hurricane Gilbert but we have near misses every few years.
When hurricane IVAN hit in sep 2004 (actually b4 it hit) the power company shut down the national "grid" so there was no electricity for 1 week (from my location in St. Andrew) but this would only happen with a category 3 or stronger hurricane.Recovery began almost immediately with tractors clearing roads and drains and crews working on power lines.
Here's what would happen:
1) The public would be advised to seek shelter
2) the police would be called on to provide extra security and prevent possible looting
3) If the storm is category 3 or higher the power grid would be shut down.
4) some cable providers will take down some of their dishes.
5) some people will batten down their windows.
After the storm has passed rapid cleanup and recovery would begin.Roads would not be closed but some may be flooded and unless u drive an SUV its best to stay off them until the water subsides. The airport would be reopened right after the storm but the airlines would have flown out their planes and would take about a day to return..there might be some minor looting of commercial stores (not houses) but not a free-for-all.It woudn't be anything like when Andrew hit Miami in 1992. |

I've been to Jamaica 6 times and we always went the first & second week of Oct. and that was suppose to be hurricane season which starts in Sept. We never had a hurricane hit when we were there. in 1983, we had reservations and a hurricane hit a few days before we suppose to go. all flights in and out were canceled, so the people who were there already there got to stay until things cleaned up and the airports were up and running again. so the people had an extra week
these days, with the global warming, anything could happen at any time. I wouldn't worry about it though, the resort you'll be staying at will take very good care of you. |

Storms are scary and hopefully if one was coming you would have enough warning and be instructed what and where to go. I imagine most places now have some sort of warning systems and a back up plant for evacuation. |

I believe Jamaica is the least likely to be hit. It has been hit far less than most of the other islands due to it's location. I think you will be fine. Get insurance just in case. It's not that expensive and well worth it if you need to use it. |

Usually storms hit here in September but nothing bad usually happens and the storms pass quickly. |

pretty good
no electricity--no air conditioning, delays on flights (airport has enough generators to "run".), no cold beer
it hopefully wouldn't be a free for all--Jamaicans are basically good people, the ffa would be the fault of the tourists, I would guess if there was one. |
