Yes they are made of wood however those homes are for either cheaper to build which may have been around for years or they are desired by the home owners, however they have same similar/familiar amenities as US.
However the majority of homes here are made of steel/re bars, concrete and building blocks{ mixture of sand and cement} ,roofing ceramics now a days or concrete slab roof.
Most houses incorporate wood in the design of the interior like windows,or in the ceramic roof for support rafters or beams, which are ment to protect against wind damage from power full major hurricanes!
Air conditions are not centrally control ed however they are sold here in split units from Carrier to Panasonic.
Some homes are equipped with hot water and regular water supply.
Dry wall is not common here, only for hotels or any other major construction were a building block would take away inches of space or time in finishing. |

Majority of the houses in Jamaica are made of building blocks with steel placed inside the building blocks and cement is used to hold these building blocks in place. Houses in Jamaica are built to withstand mainly hurricanes we don't experience really cold weather and so there is no need for insulation. The roofing are either slab roof(concrete), sheets of zinc and some people use decromatic roofing and all of these houses have bathrooms in them. There are a few board houses in Jamaica but they are nothing like the houses in some states in America and you would find that most of the board houses here are small as they are the homes of the less fortunate people that live on the island some of them have outside bathrooms while some people build a concrete bathroom on their board house. If you do happen to find big board houses they are normally old as they were built a long time ago by the people considered to be wealthy back in the day, some of these houses are guest houses. |

I dont know how some people come up with some of the answer they give, If they don't know they just dont know, My house is a four story building, the only board you will find in my house is the doors and furniture Most of the house are made out of building blocks and steel and cement, this are board houses but not like hoe people put it, I have been to Haiti and they have beautiful building just like any place in the world, Lots of people in Jamaica are living great and modern life, check it out for your self. |

Some houses in Jamaica are much stonger than the ones abroad but those are the onces made from cement and blocks. Others are made from board which are strong but not as strong as the onces made from cement. Even though the houses in Jamaica are made from different materials some are made to look like the onces abroad. |

They are made of cinder blocks. That's why they can withstand category five hurricanes better that the houses in the United states. By the way they regular windows. I don't know which house that girl was staying in. |

My parents house is made with brick and steal. The house is pure wall. There is no need for insulation because Jamaica is hot all year round. Lower income people in Jamaica, their houses are usually wood. Please do your home work next time because I notice some missionaries or researchers would visit the poorest side of Jamaica and believe all of the island is the same thing. There was a professor that mentioned that there was no running water on the island which is a lie and young children just run around naked only with their brief or panty on with no shoes. LIE LIE LIE. Go to some affluent areas in Jamaica and you will wet yourself, such as some uptown areas such as Cherry Gardens, Stony Hill etc. |

Thank God that someone did tell you that we don't live in shacks! I am Jamaican, presently living in the US. Yes we don't use Sheetrock but mostly cinder block and re-bar with slab roof/zinc/terracotta tile etc. Even though it is a Third World country, you will find the affluent areas and those that are impoverished. There is a lot to be learned about Jamaica - why not take a look at the Jamaica Tourist Board website, it most likely will give you a broad overview with pics that will give you a better idea of what I am talking about. We even have a Beverly Hills as well. :-) |

most are made from concrete block and stucco, with a steel roof. some have clay tile. |

Some are made of wood but most are made with cement blocks. Most do not have sheetrock as in the US. Some builders still use limestone (a very common Jamaican commodity) to plaster the interior walls and it is quite beautiful. You will notice a lot of stucco style houses, similar to those in South Florida. |

We have both wood and block homes. Sometimes I drive around Jamaica and it is amazing that we are a Third World country. The houses are absolutely beautiful especially at the cost of real estate in Jamaica. You can go to www.vlarealtors.com or www.century21jm.com and you can see pictures of house on the market at different price ranges. |

I was in Jamaica last year, and they seem to be made primarily of wood, and of the same style one might find in various places in the US where wooden houses prevail. |

The house I stayed in in JA, was a very standard style used all over the carribean. It was made of wood, with no insulation, no glass windows, only shutters, sometimes screens but usually not. There was a corrugated tin roof that sounded wonderfull in the rain. There are usually large porches to sit on. Some houses had indoor bathrooms, the the one I stayed in had an outhouse, and the shower was also outdoors. They are lovely, simple, houses. |
