Zona Colonial, Naco, Arroyo Hondo and Gazcue are a few that come to mind. You are usually safe in all tourist areas so stay away from the slums.

Mr. Salchichon
The Metro (Subway). They have a million guards with machine guns 24/7.

There are a lot o safe places in Santo Domingo, the capital of Dominican Republic. Place like Bella Vista, Piantini, Urbanicacion Fernandez are good one. Like all cities in the world we have safe parts and non safes parts.

The country is pretty safe for tourist all around i'll say, locals are very friendly to tourist and thugs are also really scare of tourist, laws down there are not pretty tuff for local thugs but if a tourist is involve in their crime they will be prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law so they see a tourist and they pretty much just walk away.
