1. Place:
There are many beautiful places to see with breath taking views. I travel the island all over. Many towns need improvement but still the country side is the best.
2. People:
There are many friend people who are nice and kind. Every one has a tough day and maybe you won't see a smile 100% of the time but still, people here are nice.
3. Foods:
Of course we have our traditional foods not only rice, beans but there are verduras or roots. Like the potatos, but a variety of them that are so delicious. Also traditional fried foods such as pastelillos, empanadilla (these are turn-overs filled with any ingredient such as pizza flavor, meat, cheese, guvava(guayaba), crab, even crepes of coconut or fish. Now there are also other foods from around the world offered in different restaurants. But there is a great 5 star place that I love to go to to eat the traditonal roast pork or as we say lechon asado. The pig is cleaned very good, seasoned just right and roasted on the open pit. The place is called Guavate. It is between the towns of Caguas and Cayay. There you can have roast pork, rice made with gandules or pigeon peas, with ham in it, pasteles which are ground green plaintains and other roots mixed like into a mass then you spoon some of this mass on a cured plantain leaf, put cooked pork in the middle and wrap the mass in the leaf. Tie it and boil it. It comes out all cooked and is delicious. And of course McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King, Denny's and the rest are here.
4. Culture:
The traditional music here is from the country called Musica Jibara or Country Music. In the states you play the banjo, here it is called the cuatro or four. A bit smaller than a regular guitar with 4 sets of strings 2 strings per set. Play this with a guitar, maracas, guiro ( a hollowed gourd with ridges you scape on with a wire pronged pick to scrape to play in tune with the song). The songs are Decimas or sung in 10ths with each other line in rhyme. There are also alguinaldos which are songs like the Decima but a bit fast paces. These songs are made up by the singer as he or she sings to the music. Usually this is played at Christmas time. Before back up until the mid 90's, this was heard all the time, but rap, regaeton, hip hop, rock, jazz, blues took over.
There are the Fiestas Patronales or Patron Saint festivals. Each town has it's own patron saint. Aguas Buenas the town that I lived in has Saint Monserratte as their patron saint. So on the first week of each September, the Catholic Church, the mayor and all the people coordinate and they have rides, games, live music, kiosks to buy food and a lot of other attractions on this special week. But before each night opening, there is mass in the church then the fun begins.
Christams in a way in the country is just about the same, they hold parrandas. Groups of neighbors get together and go from house to house playing the Decimas and alguinaldos. Time to start and stop is not in the question. I have been on the parrandas (our caroling) and once I was playing the guiro ( or hollowed gourd) I started at 6 pm on a Friday night and finished at 10 am on Saturday morning playing nonstop from house to house. You go play, the owner opens his house to the guests and serves traditional food and drinks. Coquito is coconut milk made with cinnamon, like egg nogg., also wine, beer, soda and others are served. Some make nice hot asopao de pollo or thick chicken soup with all the goodies.
Three Kings day, is Janurary the 6th where celebration of the 3 Kings visiting the Baby Jesus. On the the 5th at night all the children put by their beds shoe boxes of grass for the camels. So when the 3 Kings come, the camels eat the grass and the Kings leave a gift for the child in the box. On the 6th all children open their presents, go to parties but first visit the church.
Other holidays here are July 25th Puerto Rico constitution day, along with celebrating the birth of a few of the famouse polititians who helped form the Puerto Rico. Also we do celebrate all holidays that are celebrated in the United States.
Schools here are like clusters of different buildings. One could be from kinder to 3rd grade, the other from 4th to 6th, and the other from 7th to 9th. This is the Second Unit Schools because they give elementry and intermediate. The High school is apart. All the students change from one room to another for classes, except kinder and 1st grade. I was an English teacher here for 14 years. The students wear uniforms and each school is different from each other. The uniform identifies the student to the school he or she goes to and also prevents clothes problems, nothing to wear to school? Just hang up the jeans and put on the uniform. Lunch is free for all students in the cafeteria. Each school does have activities for different occations and they do take field trips, hold field day, and other events for the students and parents to participate in.
Living: The homes here are from wood to cement. The style is what the person chooses. Some homes go from 1 to 8 bedrooms. I have seen a house so big that it took at least 2 days to clean it just to start over again. There is indoor plumbing, phones, lights the works.
Enternainment: There are theaters to see movies such as Caribbean Cinemas, there is Bowling the new one is Galaxy Lanes. There are night clubs, beaches, horse racing, car racing, all types of sports.
Shopping: There are shopping malls and centers., Plaza of Americas is the biggest in the Caribbean having stores from Sears to Macy's, yes Macy's is here and Penny's also they have food courts with a wide variety of restaurants ranging from Puertorrican food to Italian. Also there are some small owned stores.
Prices: We do now pay taxes. The highway has tolls to pay. From San Juan to Ponce you pay going down 2 tolls and comming you pay 3. There are still the old roads that I love to take. Some things are expensive. Gasoline is sold by the liters at64 to 75 cents a liter. Cars are pricey also, but you can still get deals. We do have car rentals here. Hertz is way to expensive, the rest are ok.
I hope I covered what you asked for. And you are welcome. |

It is a carribbean island w/ tropical warm weather all yr long, warm water & occassional hurricanes. It is part of the US & uses USD currency. People speak spanish (puerto ricans have their own dialect, mixed w/ english words & taino indian words)& many english as well. Puerto ricans also call themselves boricuas & the island boriken, this came from the native Taino's. Puerto ricans are made up of mostly Taino & spanish(white) & african(black slaves that were brought over). The people are very friendly & the food is delicious! The main dish is red beans(or pink beans) & rice, usually served w/ some type of meat like chicken, pork chops, chip steak or bacaloa(cod fish). They use lots of tropical fruits for juices & desserts & they fry plaintains & make tostones. The island people usually drink a drink made w/ rum or they enjoy a cold beer. There are always parties & festivals going on.. you will here lots of salsa & reggaeton along w/ many other types of music.
There is alot of old spanish architecture, especially in Old San Juan. Homes are made of cement to withstand hurricanes. San Juan & Ponce are big cities. The towns are either out on the mountain sides or in a beach town, which still usually has mountains.
There is El Yunque Rain Forest, the only rain forest in the US. Camuy Caves are the 3rd largest caves in the world. They have 3 bioluminescent Bays(of only 6 worldwide & PR's are the best) which is water that glows in the dark when you touch it. The largest 1 piece radio telescope in the world(from movie Contact) in Arecibo.
Puerto Rico is beautiful & enchanting.. hence the name Isla del Encanto- Island of enchantment. There is so much culture, nightlife & relaxation. Not to mention San Juan airport & port is the largest in the carribean. There is the biggest mall in the carribean called Las Plazas Americas & tons of other shops. You can visit the Bacardi factory or any one of the white sand beaches. |

Being Fully Puerto Rican and living in Puerto Rico, I have to say that there are so many things that are beautiful and worth noticing in Puerto Rico. It is a great place to visit. Your never bored and its absolutely breathtaking. First of all the food is great, especially if your not on a diet! The beaches, the rainforest, El Yunque[gets its own category, its awesome], the people there are so nice and your always having fun! My culture is so imporant to me and probably to alot of other people. We have our own slang and way of communicating. The music there is the best and so imporatnt to the culture. anothing so imporant is probably family. I have family in Puerto Rico and every year, all of my family gets to gether in Puerto Rico for holidays like Christmas and its the best feeling in the world. Family is so important in Puerto Rican and genereally Hispanic culture. Another great thing about Puerto Rico, is simply beacause its so relaxing. The fact that you can tie a hammock to 2 trees and just lay there is amazing. Its best that you can breath it all in. The feeling is wonderful. And the weather is almost always nice. People are always saying that the sites are the best in puerto rico, but there are so many little things the makes Puerto Rico well, great to see.
If your looking for sites to see, I named some of them earlier. El yunque, all different rainforests, beaches. My grandparents are from Camuey, so a realli nice place to visit is The caves. one of my favorite places is Old San Juan.If you are coming to PR, check La Parguera, Rainforest El Yunque, The Lighthouse of Rincon, Vieques, El Morro. Ponce feels very historic and its such a nice place to visit. |
