What do I HAVE to experience in Cuba when traveling there?

I'm going for a week in December to Cuba (Varadero, SuperClubs Breezes Bella Costa). What are some of the sights, sounds, or experiences that one need not miss in Cuba?

That is very personal. Depends entirely on what you want to see

Among the experiences, it is very enlightening if you see a comunist mob beating a member of the opposition, the police then taking him to jail for who knows how long

i went to this resort in August and there's not that much to do. Some of the trips were ok but you're not advised to venture out on your own. The two day trip to havana was brilliant and good value through Virgin. Make the most of the a la carte restaurants as the buffet is very repetetive. We also did a day trip which involved cave diving which was good fun but the day was a rush and they tried to pack too much in. The snorkelling is good just off the beach but don't wonder too far or you soon get bothered by all the local kids.

I'll be going there in 6 days! I'm staying at Superclub breezes in Varadero as well...my first time going to Cuba...i'm going on an all inclusive. I went to tripadvisor.com for reviews - but some people had bad things to say. I'm just gonna keep an open mind & go, I'm sure it'll be fun. Make sure to take candies, gum & soap for the cleaning ladies- apparently they really appreciate it & they'll clean ur room better!! Check out this website : http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g147275-d266656-Reviews-SuperClubs_Breezes_Varadero-Varadero_Cuba.html

I'll tell u about it when i get bk on the 25th...ask another question around that date & i'll answer it !! How many people are u going with? I'm just going with my boyfriend - we're looking to relax & not really party. we want to drink lots of course & have good meals & do the scuba diving etc. Hope u have an amazing time!!

There is so much to see. Being in Varadero puts you very close to Havana, Zapata, Cienfuegos and Villa Clara. Just look at the links and you will see so many things that are available to see and do to make your trip memorable. Each place is beautiful....so basically you'll know what catches your interest the most. Obviously, it may be difficult to see it all in just a week. I'd recommend to make another trip to Cuba and spend a bit more time (if possible) and see/do more things.
Check out the music spots in Cuba!
BUT, most importantly, really get to know the Cubans and make great friends with them. THAT is what the best experience will be for you in Cuba.

Im not ruling out going out of your way to watch a real but rare to the eye of the average tourist what someone here has described to you , but before you raise that first shot glass you may want to atleast hang on a street corner in the city for awhile and watch how fidels thugs (police )randomly stop , and remove a passenger from thier vehicle and subject them to lenghty interrogations for no reason and then throw the person in the gastapo mobile and haul them away while leaving thier vehicle in the middle of the road. ( a common site and a good introduction to some of the less painful realities of the country ). ..but it sounds to me like you want the disney experience though . that package includes the character breakfast with raul and a ride through the back streets of habana on the big pink camel bus. ( again i will rip myself off .).i want to say that if one returns from cuba with nothing more than a nice tan , a box of cigars , a picture in front of ernies pub and a mild case of herpies they should check thier pulse . in no way am i suggesting or implying that you shouldnt feel a beautiful stretch of cuban beach under your feet , ( or a dance floor ) i think you should as cubans love to party and really know how , but i am saying be sensitive to how much lime you put in your mojito . ya dig . and realize that while dad is giving the guests run of the castle for the week to enjoy and exploit however they like the kids are being thrown on the street without a blanket and not allowed within a mile of thier own house. goza !

As they say, you ought to visit Havana. A city of legend !

Beyond that, a lot depends on your tastes and interests.

For train buffs, there is the early electric Hershey train between Havana and Matanzas.

Although the town of Varadero is unlike most of Cuba because it is dominated by tourism, many do like to hang out there.

Visit the Dolphinarium.

hi,
i reccomend you skip Varadero... it's just a resort and cuba has so much more to offer.

stay in private homes (casa particular) instead, it'll be cheaper and give you a better impression of the cuban people. definetly stay in havana for a few days. the western region of pinar is amazing, especially viniales and its surrounding.
Trinindad is also a very nice small town.
for carribean resorts don't go to cuba... do it for the people, the culture
