In the US everyone just say he's Puerto Rican they don't identify him as black as they would to a black person in the US. |

I'm glad you ask that, I am Dominican, and Puerto Rico and Dominicans usually call people dark skin (******), but it means black, but it doesn't have the same meaning that this society label had label them, to us is just *****, and let's say me I call my husband *****, and he call me negra (femenine for black) and we do not get offended, because is just a swett thing between us. I WISH IT COULD IT BE THE SAME HERE. |

Puerto Rican.
He is Puerto Rican. Puerto Ricans dont call themselves white or black, They call theirselves Puerto Rican, all Puerto Ricans for the most part are a mixture of Taino Indian, Spanish and African.
Before the spanish invasion, there was no so called Puerto Ricans, they were indians from the arawak tribe, then the spanish invaded bringing African slaves with them,
so Puerto Ricans range in shades.
Puerto Ricans dont feel that calling themselves blacks or white is necessary, color doesnt define them. |

I do not consider the people I know from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Brazil, Nicaragua, etc. to be black. Some of them do consider themselves mulatto or black but never identify themselves as African Americans. They do not like being compared to blacks in the USA even though they too live in the US. They say it's different even though their ancestors were brought to Latin America as slaves as well. There nationality and ethnicity is always # 1 and their race is last.
Maybe it's because I'm Hispanic and most people from the Caribbean are mixed anyway. At least in Cuba it was common knowledge that some men (including those in my family) had a bi-racial child somewhere. It was never spoken about but you accepted it because that's the way things were. As far as I know, none of my friends have dated an African American but they dated Anglos, Hispanics, Europeans, and Middle Eastern people. Today in most Hispanic homes it's common to have an Aunt or Uncle that in the USA would be viewed as black by a none Hispanics. |

Here Puerto Ricans are a mix of Taino, Spanish and African. Later came Dominicans, Cubans and from other places in the Caribbean.
Here we can say negrito which is a cute friendly word for black without offence.
Prietito is the diminutive of prieto which is black but used in a friendly way.
Some will call Tito by his first name, or say Sr. Trinidad.
But all is with care and love because people should not be discriminated for their color or classified by color. All are brothers and sisters with visions of a better future for Puerto Rico through sports, education and many other areas. |

The US is a society that has an obssesion with race. It is the only country in the world were people need to identify themselves in the official Census as White,Black...
This has to do with the racial history of the US and the divisions between white and black, which was and always been a troubled one. The racial divisions by color is something only seen in the US,(Black,White,Yellow,Brown) ,outside the US you do not see 'White school' or a 'Black neighboorhood' this is pure a product of american historical racial divisions.
The rest of the world is concerned with ethnicity (nationality). Color does not define the person, nationality does.
Felix Trinidad is seen as a Puerto Rican in Puerto Rico . Also he might have some indian genes. All of Latin America has mixed race countries and race does not play the same role as in US |

They would probably call him Felix or Senor Trinidad. |

"Yo soy boricua pa' que tu lo sepas".
("I'm a boricua for your information".)
Besides "boricua" as we call all people from PR regardless color skin, we could use terms like:
* "*****" (black in spanish) if the person has a very dark skin color,
* "prieto", which means dark;
* "trigueño" (which is like brown or dark brown).
As someone said before, we puertorricans or boricuas are a very mixed race with blood (genes) from:
1. Europe: Spain mostly but also small groups from other european countries,
2. Africans (brought by Spain as slaves),
3. Native (taÃnos).
4. Also since 1898: northamericans (USA). |
