Jamaica is a beautiful country. Just don't be naive and stupid when you get to the island. The beaches are breath-taking and the hills and valleys are amazing. In the tourist areas, there will be people trying to convince you to buy what they are selling but just say no thank you and don't make a big deal out of it. As I mentioned before, just don't be stupid and naive. I read another posting for this same question where someone mentioned that the food was "terrible." I honestly don't know where tht person went but he obviously couldn't have been talking about Jamaican food. Ackee and saltfish is my favourite dish. Don't knock on other people's culture. Jamaica is a 3rd world country. We are not run by the US like other islands in the Caribbean. Jamaica is extremely unique and it will always be. Sure, Jamaica might have poverty but name one country that doesn't! Have you heard about Cherry Gardens, Red Hills, Jacks Hill and the other rich parts of Jamaica? Not everyone in Jamaica is poor; this is a common misconception.Take a drive through the hills of St. Andrew and Kingston and you will see what I'm talking about. I understand this is an opinionated question but some people are just too ignorant... We are people of a different culture. We do things different. How boring would the world be if everyone was the same? And no.... Jamaican fast food restaurants are not ALL on cinder blocks... I wish that people would get the facts straight and explore the entire country and not make ignorant comments. Montego Bay is in St. James which is one parish out of the 14 in Jamaica. Don't make judgements when you've only been to one place. You have to travel all over Jamaica to have the real experience. If you're going to stay in one part of Jamaica, in my opinion...it makes no sense to go at all. You have to explore the Cays off the coast of Kingston, especially Lime Cay and Maiden Cay. You have to go to Portland where it's more it's more rural. The best places in Jamaica are the places that are not advertised on the television on one of those "Come to Jamaica and feel alright" commercials.

I think Jamaica is a wonderful place and people need to stop talking **** about it. Jamaica has the same problems as any other damn country in the world. Yes here in America people tell us to go home also. There is also a lot of poverty here in the U.S, but because it is such a large country, it's not noticed as much, whereas Jamaica is a small island, so of course yes you will see how poor we are, well at least our government is trying to do something abou tit and actually cares about it's people. So stop dissing the country when the same **** is going on all around.

I think it's a beautiful place with beautiful beaches and just really breath-taking features. God really did a beautiful job with Jamaica!!!!

Jamaica has it's problems like anyother 3thrd world country. we have crime and violence like any other country. there r lots of shady characters around here like any other country. we r not rich like other countries & and we don't always smile bcaz our people r humans, they feel. we r not perfect and if there is a country that is perfect tell me about it caz i don't know it. i love my country and it pains me to c or hear people say bad things about her. she is a beautiful lady but like many others she is not perfect. the people aren't always smiling but not every1 in the world smiles all the time.
jamaica is a fun place if ur into parties, the music is the greatest as 4 education of the people, a lot of jamaicans are educated as a matter of fact our education system is 1 of the best, with dedicated teachers who work hard to c that each of their student move on to college/universites. many of our students can be seen doing extremely well in american universites, english 1s too.
political wise, our priminister is a woman, the system isn't perfect but we r a country of people that never let anything stop us from climbing to the top.
i love my country it's not the worst place to b, i can think of worst. it' beautiful there's not another place i can think of i'd rather b. after all if ever i need help i can ask any1(i mean any1)i can never go hungry when i have so many freindly neighbours and family member who live by the sayin 'do unto others what u want them to do to u'. i can go to the bus top and make a friend 4 life in 5 min flat. and i do mean 4 life.as much as we think the old days have completely gone they have not. here every1 is there brother's keeper. course there r the few bad eggs. but jamaica is a good place to b, the best place to b.

Jamaica is the most friendliest place in the world. The people there are wonderful. We go there every year. Stay away from Kingston, it is not very safe. The rest of the island is fantastic, Runaway bay, montego bay, ocho rios, negril they are all the best. The resorts by superclubs have the nicest people working there. Sandals and Beaches are okay. The best site to see and do is Dunn River Falls. It is so Beautiful. Jamaica is a very poor place but the people there are so interesing and every time you go there you feel like you are going HOME!!! The oceans are bluer than a gem, the flowers are bright and have wonderful scent. You have to experiance it once and you find your self going back year after year. There is so much beauty there.

ahmos
As a tropical country which I can sleep on its sand under its sunshine and have all freedom, all time to go and swim in its sea.

I think Jamaica is the best place on EARTH!! Its wonderful in every sense. It has its usual share of bullshit just like anywhere else but its JUST GREAT!!

As an American, I absolutely love it. I like to think of the Island as my second home and the people that I've met my family. The first time I went, I didn't want to return to the US. That's how good of a time I had.

As with any place that you go (even here in the US), you will find good and bad. It's all in what you make of it and if you've done your "homework" before you travel.

Its Very Hot In Jamaica
BShakey really has my blood boiling. I have read his negative views before but this time it seems he has edited his post instead of pasting the same one in response to EVERY question about Jamaica.

How dare he knock the food, hardly anyone when they go to the states says " umm where's the seasoning" because we know that food varies everywhere, as its a part of culture. The Ritz Carlton food would be tasty to you sir as it is mainly suited to the foreign visitors there outside of the property is what Jamaican seat and to experience Jamaica you should have brought an open mind and palate.

Jerk chicken in its true form is cooked over pimento wood to get the wonderfu lfavour. Lets talk about thbe artery clogging deeped fried potatoes and chicken located at the fast food joints abroad.

Thankfully Jamiaca has rid itself of McDonalds.

Island girl you tell him and he wouldnt even have to come to Kingston to see luxury ifhe only ventured to Ironshore, MoBay he would have seen that.

In one breath he claims they people are too pushy then the next he says everyone was indifferent towards him. Make up your mind, please. If he has ever been to an Italian craft market he would realize that the sellers there are just as pushy and a "No, Thank you" would have been sufficient.

I will agree that driving for tourists is not a good idea what he should have done was charter a taxi operator to carry him around. Next time research a country before you come it will save you the hassle of having a bad experience.

WE are doing somehting right as visitors keep returning and just recently villas have been bought by American actors and basketball players at Blue Lagoon, Portland.

Pleasently surprised. It is a lot safer than people make it out to be. The people don't have as much as more developed countries yet I think they are much more happier in general. Sometimes people can be a little pushy to buy from them but as long as your upfront, no problem mon. Often I would use the phrase, sorry mon, my cupboard is full and they would get the point. The island of wood and water has much to offer the adventureous tourist.

I think that you should not drive in Jamaica!
Just eat, drink and go to the beach!!!

The landscape is beautiful. I loved beaches, waterfalls, rivers, cockpit country, Port Antonio, Portland Parish, Treasure Beach. It's a lovely country. The problem with Jamaica is that's too close to the United States. The government of Jamaica almost sold the north of the island to american and other foreigners tourism that spend all there money inside all inclusive hotels and don't chat and talk with locals. Many jamaicans feel that their land is being spoiled and they're taking nothing from it. I like the directeness of jamaicans and I understand why they try to make a living of healthy tourists from USA. Besides, the best spots, the best dance hall, the best parties are on countryside, not on those all inclusives where you meet tourists and more tourists and jamaicans work to small salaries.

I went there and a lot of the people were really unfriendly. People kept telling us to go home. So we did and don't plan to ever go back. I thought the people in Bermuda were way friendlier.
