What do you do to prevent malaria on a trip to the Dominican Republic? |

Malaria is extremely rare in the Dominican Republic, so you shouldn't worry about it. But if you want to cover yourself just in case so you won't worry about it while here, you can take medicine called 'aralin'. You can buy it cheap at any pharmacy in the DR. But seriously, don't worry about it!
If you are concerned about getting sick from something transmitted by mosquitos, you should be more concerned about "dengue". To prevent that, the only thing you can do is prevent getting bitten by a mosquito that is infected.
So really the easiest way to prevent either one of those is to wear mosquito repellent. |

If your going to be at a resort just make sure you wear mosquito spray when you go out at night.
If your going to be staying elsewhere, lots and lots of mosquito spray and mosquito nets over the bed. |

you don't have to worry about malaria in tourist areas or local areas, the only you would kind of have to worry is if you go to really poor areas( and i mean more than usual) or if you go to the forest or some type of place like that |

NOTHING... because you can NOT PREVENT MALARIA... the drugs available do NOT prevent it or CURE IT.. all they do is MAKE THE SYMPTOMS LESS. People who are going to countries where there is malaria are better off to take their chances rather than take the medicines because they may or may NOT get malaria but they WILL damage their liver with the meds. |

Where in the Dominican are you going?
In Punta Cana, and near the Haitian border, it's extremely unlikely to contract malaria, but it's possible. If your worried bug stray should do the trick, mostly just around dusk and dawn. If you're not going near the Haitian border, and you aren't staying in Punta Cana I wouldn't even worry about it. |

It is rare but if you want to be sure and take xtra precautions go to your local chemist and they will give you some tablets that you can purchase over the counter..
